I barter with a shop keeper and the screen tels me that they have 2,000 gold.
well being the kind loving guy that I am I smack them with the sword they just sold me.
when they are dead I check their bodys no 2k gold!
I ransack the store no 2k gold!!!
where are they keeping the money...

| | You may call it lack of realism, but I call it clever balancing. The developers were clearly prepared for someone just like you coming along and whacking all the merchants.

| | | no you could just put a security guard in each shop or make the fine for killing a shop owner much higher.
right now store keepers go for around 50 gp a pop.
thats not balanced |

| | | or... Alternatively, the devs could have made the merchants more useful by giving ALL of them some specialty items that only they would or could sell. If the only way to obtain a really necessary item(s) was through bartering with a vendor, then it stands to reason that there would be at least some merchants each player would want to keep in his gameworld...
...of course, the less-useful merchant's deaths SHOULD place some serious coin in our purses

| | | I do agree that the guards are seriously underpowered, and some of the fines are ridiculously low.

| | At least if you loot the store you will find most of the stuff that you saw in their inventory - I think that's nice. In Baldur's Gate a guy could have a million magic items for sale, you kill him and he has a club and a belt.

| | | But you have to admit, @Jaker, that only adds incentive to NPC-killing as a way around normal methods of gaining drakes and equipment--kinda short-circuits the whole structure of the game, IMO.
