Its a spell that costs that many magicka points. So when you cast that particular Open spell, it will cost you 50 magicka.

Note that the lock may require a higher level Open spell. Check the lock before you cast that Open, to make sure you aren't wasting your magicka. You'll probably encounter a variety of spells named similarly, with identical basic effects. But--the higher the magicka cost, usually the higher some value associated with the spell.

So a Levitate spell that costs 85 magicka instead of 45 may help you levitate faster, or longer. Or a little of both. And if the magicka cost is too high, you won't be able to cast the spell.

I'm not sure that's the points badboyd22 is referring to...

If the spell effect is listed as for example "Open 50 pts on touch" it will open a lock of level 50 or less if the player is touching the locked item...

If it is "Fire Damage 2 pts for 10 secs on target" then it is 2 points per second of fire damage for 10 secs...

It is the 'magnitude' of the spell effect I think is being referred to...

IIRC having a higher point value helps to capture higher Leveled creatures (for instance, a golden saint May resist a spell with 5 points but be trapped by a 50 point spell. Correct me if Im wrong )

thx for all the help, but i got 2 more questions about spells
1.Is it possible to upgrade a spell?(open 50 pts to open 100 pts)
2. How can i get more change of casting? i once wanted to make a spell and the change sayd: -255, now that can never be good. so i wondered how to make that change a little bit more.

1. As soon as you have at least one spell (any one) of desired effect you could go to spellmaker and make one of your own. In your case you could make a spell Open 100 on Touch and could name it as you saw it fit (in fact you'd have to, since there's no automatic name generation).
2. I hope i got it right (chance or change?) So, basically probability of success depends on your skill in discipline the spell belongs to and on your attribute governing this discipline. For spells it's usually either Intellingence, Willpower or Personality. Intelligence seems to be playing certain role in casting any spell nonetheless. Then, the percentage shown by the Fatigue bar also influences the success rate greatly. Luck plays its part, too, though not so obviously - but you might notice the increase of success probability in the spells list if you had noticeable increased luck (by Alchemy or a spell, enchanted items including).
There are spells almost impossible to cast with 100% success without boosts other way than from a scroll - Summon Golden Saint on Self for 60 seconds, for example. It's meant to be so.

There are also potions that will temporary increase your intelligence (Fortify Intelligence), making it easier to cast all spells. But we're venturing outside the question, here.

The number refers to the points required to cast, and/or the probable level of effect, along with a vague indicator of difficulty.
