Talking Opinion Thread.

OK, I'm a nube

I have never been into computer games (except "Magic, Duels of the Plainswalkers", by WOC) before Morrowind, but I'm Hooked

Are there any other games as remotely awesome as this one?????????
Especially in the art department. I especially like the way it plays in first person view. You really feel you are there.

Anyhoo 'm interested in your faves and why

The only other games that I have liked that are first person games are the shooters out there like Half Life and Medal of Honor. Great games.

As far as RPGing Baldurs Gate II with expansion still reigns supreme in my own mind, but the view is 3rd person. Completely different feel than Morrowind, yet I still enjoy both games.

I've enjoyed RTS games, such as Age of Empires. The BG series are still, IMO, the best all-time RPG games. Sure, they're 2D, but I've yet to see anyone successfully implement a single-player party-based RPG in a 3D world. I also enjoyed IWD and PS:T.

One of my favorite 1st person games is Myst III, but Knowing how "odd", as my friends put it, I am, I wouldn't recomend it to you. Even though all the art in that game is AWESOME! Games I have been obsessed with in the past: Practically all Blizzard games, Age of Empires, and Baldurs Gate.

NWN is supposed to be good, but it isnt!! the graphics suck and the plot blows.

BG2, thought it is 2d and 3rd person, is the best rpg you will find. (this opinion is shared by many)

Put simply, there is no RPG that offers the level of visual attractiveness and interaction with the environment currently that Morrowind does. I doubt too many forthcoming games will go that route, since the engine took a long time to build. However, I could end up eating my words, and would do so, cheerfully, if the results were good.

The nearest thing (and it's a very distant near, if you take my meaning) is Wizardry 8. You run a party of 6 characters from a first person perspective, across a nicely drawn 3D environment. But it's nothing like Morrowind.

If you're willing to settle for third-person, 2D RPGs (and I am), check out BG2, and Planescape: Torment. Both of them have what you might call the "core values" of RPGing down, with highly interesting NPCs who join you, a wide variety of puzzles and battles, and lots of interactive dialog (much more so than Morrowind, which was poor in this regard).

While the graphics are terribly outdated now, Fallout 2 is a great RPG. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, you have pretty much absolute freedom to do whatever you want. You can be wonderfully good or terribly evil, and both are staisfactory from a role playing perspective, IMO.

Well, there's "Gothic".

Although it's 3rd person and not 1st, the graphics are *almost* the equal of MW. The lighting effects, day/night cycle and weather effects *are* just as awesome.

Gothic even surpasses MW in one respect - the world truly is 'seamless'. Apart from the 2 mines which do load as separate levels, the world in Gothic is one big level. Now, granted it's not as big as Vvardenfell, it's still a sizeable area. Imagine leaving your camp on one side of the map, running across to the coast, jumping in the water, swimming around to a cave in the seacliff, working your way up through the cave to its exit on the clifftop and, then, running around to all 4 corners of the map and climbing up the mountains so high you can touch the Barrier- ALL WITHOUT A SINGLE LOADING BAR!!! Going in and out of building without a black screen/loading bar. You'll be scratching your head and wondering 'howdedodat?'. It really is amazing.

As an added bonus, EVERY line of dialog in the game is voiced, and quite decently, too, although in as a bizarrely wide range of accents as in Wizardry 8.

The story, while not earth-shatteringly SoA/ToB epic, is pretty interesting and engrossing enough to hold one's attention. The game is stuctured similarly to MW - you spend the fairly open-ended first part buffing yourself up, then you must join one of the three camps to continue. (If you save at this point, you can go back and play the other camps' storylines without having to replay the whole first part again.)

The only real drawback is the interface - the game is entirely keyboard driven, the mouse is only used for guiding your direction. There's an awkward default keymap and an alternate (and customizeable) FPS WASD keymap to choose between. It actually works pretty well and comes to feel fairly natural, ONCE YOU GET USED TO IT, which can take a few days. So don't be put off by that aspect of it.

There's an English-language demo available around (gamesdomain, for one) but it's a whopping 271MB - hope you have broadband.

Price should be down in the $20-30 range by now.

I really enjoyed Gothic but, remember, I'm the guy who liked PoR, too.

I don't want to compare Morrowind with any other game at this point but one upcoming first-person RPG might give you a feeling of that at least in the interactivity with the enviroment (personal experience from the demo version).
I am speaking for a not so known title called Arx Fatalis, which the international version is due to be released in September, however the German version has already been released.(And it is also highly rated from a couple of reviews i've seen) The game looks promising and it is pretty sure to lure all Ultima funs into playing it, including me.

Other than that you might be interested for a not so RPG game but with first person prespective like Deus Ex.

For a first person view (but with a party of 6-8) try Wizardry 8.

The plot can sometimes be incomprehensible and the fights can take up to 30 mins. but it's great fun.

Thanx Guys,
I'll have to check some of these out. Sounds like almost everyone likes the BG series, so I'll probably start out there. mmm, but "Gothic" and "Wizardry 8" sound pretty cool too. Guess I'm going shopping.

Deus Ex is an awesome RPG and first person shooter mix. It's less RPG than all these games, but it is the first person perspective and it is RPGish. I'd recommend at least checking that one too. And the BG series is the best set of RPGs I've ever played. Neverwinter is one I like too, but this one is more controversial. It has a lot of bugs but they are being worked out and when you get bored with the single player campaign or even if you don't like it all, there are literally hundreds of user-made modules for single and multi-player. I'm sure you'll be able to find one that you like. And for those that complain about the camera, there is a hack for it on the official boards that let's you go all the way down to the ground and zoom much further in and out.

Deus Ex was great!

Oooh, but then there's System Shock 2, a sci-fi FPS with RPG-style character developement. (Strictly linear story, though.) Quite possibly the creepiest game ever made, Undying wishes it was this scary. Plus, it's only $10.

You've hat a couple of posts saying "NWN sucks!". What about saying why it suck instead of just making idiotic replys everytime someone mentions the words Neverwinter Nights.
