Mods ; how to install

*happy dance* I got my new comp today!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It seems to run morrowind real smoth, framerate seems better than my xbox.

I do have a few problems though.

How do i upload mods??????
I clicked on the file at thelys (Vivecs fate and some cloak mod) and saved it, and it just made a shortcut. The mods dont seem to be in game. Can someone give me a step by step?????????

Also, Morrowind summit seems to require membership to download mods. Does anyone know where I can get Morrowind Complete and the Pegas Horse Ranch for free or will I have to pay????????????

Thanks in advance,
Chu

OK Chu, bear in mind that I am no techie, but I'll try to make this as clear as possible.

1. File Planet (The Summit) does not actually require a subscription, be really careful about scrolling through all of the pages. They just like to make you think you need a subscription. All you need to do is register, and you are fine.

2. I find the easiest way to install mods is manually.
Create a folder on your desktop, and name it according to the mod. Unzip all of the files into your folder. You may need Zip Genius (http://www.zipgenius.it/) to unpack the files. It is unpacks a wide range of packaging formats, it's free, and it works very well.

3. Now that you have the mod unpacked, what you need to do is copy the plug-in itself (looks like a little swiss army knife or a scrap of note paper), along with any folders marked "Icons," "sounds" "textures," "meshes," music," etc.

4. Once you have hit copy ( I find it easiest to copy any folders etc. all at once), Go to you main Morrowind directory, and then to a folder named "Data Files." Open it.

5. Hit paste. You will be told that x,y, and z names already exist, agree to replacing all.

6. Fire up your game, go to "data files" from your game menu, and put a checkmark next to your mod or mods.

7. That's it, you are ready to roll.

Note 1: It is extremely important to read the readmes that come with the mods.

Note 2: Some mods conflict with one another, be sure that those you select do not do so.

Note 3: *Always* back up your Data Files folder and save games before installing any mods, especially the large ones.

Summit doesn't require membership. You just have to register with FilePlanet, which you can do by clicking on Login. Keep that cookie on your computer, and everytime you want to download, your registration will bypass the login screen.

You will not have a subscription, so you only have access to "public download areas." Those sometimes have a wait (depending on time of day), but never anything I found too terrible.

EDIT: Bah. DW beat me to it.

Actually, I find that these days the wait time for MW mods is zero on all of the free servers

Actually there isn't fileplanet any more, it's under GameSpy now. Old Fileplanet account is still valid for now, though. One have to look around a bit to find how to log in altogether, though while it doesn't come down to the download no logging in is required.

I think you mean, if I understand you correctly, that FilePlanet has been sold to GameSpy. True, but the FilePlanet logo is what any newcomer will see when they go to download from Summit--no matter who owns it, right now.

Thanks for your help guys, but I still have one problem.

Where is my main morrowind directory? *embarrassed*

I can find the data files on the screen that loads when you click on "Morrowind" from the desktop, but I cant paste anything in there.

If you have Windows Search installed (with or without that nauseating, animated dog), do a file/folder search on Bethesda Softworks. Any games from that company should be one level down, in a subdirectory, including Morrowind.

Yes, that appears to be your Morrowind directory. Make sure it's the directory on your hard drive, and not on your Morrowind CD.

Hmm..
*Go to "Start" (it should be on the lower left of your screen)

*Go to "My Computer." Double click to open it.

*You should see a little icon that looks a bit like a computer somewhere there, probably labelled "C Drive." Click on it, so that it opens. You probably have more than one hard drive on your new machine, but, I think that by default Morrowind, and any other software you install, will install on the C Drive, unless you specify otherwise during the installation process.

*You'll see some folders in there, double click on the one that says "Program Files."

*In Program Files, you'll see even more folders, open the one that is labelled "Besthesda Softworks."

*Then click on the folder called "Morrowind." Once that is open, you should see a folder named "Data Files"

Hope that helps, and good luck

You're welcome I recall how frustrating it can be to deal with this kind of stuff when you are first starting out, so I read your last post and felt your pain

Send a message via MSN to Greg.
However, if you add retextures and new meshes, that is a bugger...

You have to create new folders. It is quite tricky to get 100% right - the mannequin one was worst...
