SPOILER
to get to the top of the fighters guild you have to kill gentleman jim stacey (the thieves guild head) and to get to the top of the thieves guild you have to kill the fighters guild head (cant remember his name - a nord in vivec)
i figured it was one or the other with those two guilds

i figured it was one or the other with those two guilds | To get top of fighters guild by using that method... but better way to that would be by talking to guy in Ald Ruhn.. If you dont want to go on killing spree.. |

| | | i have already become they head of the theives guild and the morag-tong or watever it is, and now i have come as far as i can in the fighters guild, without going to guy in vivec, but when i went to the guy in vivec i found him already dead, so i figer i must have killed him for a quest in either thieves guild or morag-tong, how can ibecome fighters guild master? |
