Is this a super bug or am I an idiot?

I really hope im just an idiot. Any way I was on one of the theive guild quest and I got caught by a guard. With out thinking I simply surendered the stolen goods and payed the fine. After realizing that I had just surendered my quest loot to a guard I simply figured it would be returned to its rightful owner and figured I would go back and steal it again. This however is not the case. Ive searched the entier manor and its simply not there anymore. I even tried to pickpocket the guard that took my stuff to no avail. Im really stuck on this quest and need help. Does anyone know what happens to stolen loot once its confiscated?

There's an "evidence" chest in the Legion prison. If you can unlock it the stuff is yours. If your Security is too low either practice alot or become a Imperial Legionnaire.
If you choose the Legionnaire path look below :

Favored Skills
Athletics, Spear, Long Blade, Acrobatics, Sneak, Security

When you get to the level of Knight Protector which requires 33 Endurance and Personality as well as one of the favored skills at 70 and two others at 25, you can freely look in those chests and take what you will.

ya somthing like that happind to me to I got a fine for 5 gold.. nothing major just trying to sleep in someones bed LOL

i lost all my things when i paid my fine and i saved right before i did the bed thing, but yeah if you ever plan on stealing or anything like that make shure you save first.
