House Hlaalu conflict with main quest?

I seem to remember reading about problems concerning House Hlaalu and the main quest. It had something to do with Crassius and becoming a Hortator too soon. The result was that either that you couldn't continue with the main quest or it was impossible to gain rank in House Hlaalu. I realise it's pretty vague but that's all I remember.
Does anybody know about this? I did a search here on GB and a couple of Googles but I couldn't find anything.

Hmm, last time I played it went the other way.
I choose house Redoran, gained highest rank and finished the main quest, then talked to the guy in Ebonheart and he made me member of house Hlaalu.
