Enchanting a magic item

Is it possible to enchant an already enchanted item? What would it happen if you could? Would the item lose its previous properties or the new ones would combine to make a more powerful item?

I don't think it's possible. I've never had an already enchanted object show up when the enchanting menu opens.

If that were possible I would have it do Restore Health 1 point a second 500 times.
