Fire Temple Quests

Please help. I am trying to complete the second quest for the Fire Temple (recruit a group of Ogres from a cave), and can't figure out how to do it. According to the walkthrough all I have to do is talk to them, but that doesn't work (maybe my diplomacy of 7 is too low?). I've also tried knocking them out using nonlethal damage, but after I knock them all out nothing happens. So I rest to let them get up, but then they just attack me. Am I doing something wrong, or is this a bug in the game? Thanks for any help.

I used my Dwarf's intimidate skill rather than my Paladin's diplomacy and it worked just fine. Can't remember the level it was when I completed that quest though.....
