Trouble Playing Oblivion on PC. Please help!

I've installed Oblivion and everything seems to work perfectly fine. But everytime it's finished installing I click on "Play" and it always looks like it's about to load it in a mini screen on the top right of my monitor but it then goes to an error message saying the game has crashed and whether I want to send a report or cancel.

If you have any information please use step-to-step instructions (starting from the "Start" icon on the bottom left) on where I need to go to fix the problem. I'm clueless on how to get to certain parts of my computer that may need to be fixed.

Thanks...

Hmm, it'd be good for you to post your system specs, video cards/ram/processor speed and all.

What are your system specs? I had a similar problem with Oblivion and it is because my graphics card does not meet the min requirements - I borrowed it from a friend out of curiousity just to see if I could get it to work, as some games I have managed to run below spec with no problems. Oblivion has performance issues though even with some high spec machines so if your computer does not meet the min requirements then its not going to work at all.

Thumbs down As I recall, that is a sign of running an Intel IGP

When the moderating nazis made Bethsoft's forums too rigidly jackbooted and I quit going there, dopey newbies were still wandering in with that error and claiming their PCs met the requirements, in spite of not even having any video card. Idiots. It's right on the warning label, but they wouldn't read it for comprehension.

Only the 3000X, I think, of Intel's various IGPs doesn't cause that error, but really old pre-3D video cards will do it also.

Yeah, that makes perfect sense cos I have an Intel chipset and just thought I'd try it anyway because sometimes I can get games to work even if the the Intel chipsets are not supported. As soon as I tried though it was pretty obvious that its my graphics chipset that was causing it

Not even the published minimums are enough

nVidia's FXes are supposed to be "supported". I've tested Oblivion with an FX 5900 Vanilla card, and an FX 5700 Ultra (the specs on the two are not that far apart), and out of doors, you can just forget trying the game with those. With a Geforce 6600 GT, still not good enough.

The "recommended level" 6800 card (mine is a GT) isn't too awful, but an X800 is far better.

The particular error behavior that is most associated with the Intel IGPs is because they always lacked the most elementary of 3D functions, Transform and Lighting (T&L). But there are old add-in video cards that didn't have that still around (S3 made a lot of cheap cards back when 3D was getting started, before being absorbed by Via).
