| | Have you tried switching between different optical drives? It might help. I once had an installation problem on one of the games (can't remember which one) I had and when I switched to a different optical drive, the installation worked properly without any problems.
Another way is to clean the disc to see if it helps or not. Hope this helps.

That could be the problem. I suggest using a wet tissue paper to clean it or as what someone suggested back at a thread in SYM is to use toothpaste and a cloth. I'm not sure if the latter worked, though. If those doesn't work, I'm sorry that I can't be of much help here.

| | | My first advice would be to test if the disc can install on another machine. If it fails the main possibility is that it is the disc which is the problem.
If not, then you know that the problem is with your drive and can start to debug from that knowlegde.
Right now it is a toss up of whether the disc, the drive or the other hardware is the issue, so it'll be difficult to give you proper advice.
If you do not have the chance to install it on another machine, then see if you have the possibility to borrow another drive from a friend and see if that will let you install, in which case you know it likely is the drive which causes issues.
Also - remember if you have some antivirus/spyware programs with anti-script execution on your harddrive running (such as Norton Autoprotect) which can interfeere with the install process. So try to deactivate all such processes running as well. |

| | | ok
first off if I try to install it in a laptop but this laptop could probably play it, it would damage it right, basically we're just trying to see if the disk works and installs properly right?
well I was able to install half life 2 and doom3, should it also be able to install Oblivion?
hmm, didnt know that, I never got such a problem with them on.
I have Norton security anti virus 2006
reboot Spysweeper
Spybot search and destroy
so I would I be able to disactivate them with out having to uninstall them??

And there should be no harm done installing Oblivion on your laptop, to see if the disc work well enough. |

| | ok ok, I was actually able to install it into the laptop.....
so this means that my optical drive is responsible for this I suppose the real problem is though what optical drive can I buy to play this, unfortunately the laptop came company built so it isnt like my pc where I can actually see the make of the drive
if someone could go to :
Circuitcity.com
I didnt link it because I wasnt sure I was allowed to.
and see what drive would play oblivion I would appreciate it a lot. I would but obviously I wouldnt know which one *cries*
the reason why I pick this is because its in my area and I could go and buy one. I could always order one through the net, but I want to play this asap, due to my working statis and everyone knowing that I would almost everyday and right now I have like a week off of college and I would love to take advantage of that. So please help a fool out.

| | | Does your optical drive function well when installing other games? Because if the optical drive is faulty, you could claim your warranty since you just bought it from your nearby vendor. If other games install without any problems, it might be the optical drive itself that is not supported by Oblivion. As for optical drive brands, I highly recommend Lite-On since they're quite a reputable brand.

| | ok just bought a liteon dvd rom drive and nothing
which means there is something else that wont let it read, but what, I was able to get past this installing point on my mothers laptop, and hers doesnt even come close to the requirements to play this damn game, very sad that my rig is rejecting it.
It keeps saying that"setup could not find specific file, path, or disk
please insert proper disk or specify another path"
so I assume it has to do with the path right?
how do I fix this?
when loading the path says- "D:"
or
"E:"
and have nothing after it, what can I do to fix this
