Raid 1 after a crash

I had this strange idea: say, you've got two HD's in raid 1 (one's mirroring the other). If Windows crashes and you've got to reinstall, is it possible to get the HD's out of raid, reinstall Windows on one, afterwards get the lost data from the other, en then put them back into raid?

AFAIK, when you create a RAID array, all data on the hard disks are destroyed.
