Does anyone have any ideas please? For other reasons (connection problems, possibly corrupt DUN) I ended up reinstalling Windows. It was not a clean reinstallation only an overwrite (though I was not prompted that some files were older etc etc). Now this is all I have done. When I check the Outlook account settings they are correct *shrugs* I can see my email if I log in to the ISP server remotely, but it is just not downloading....I lie, it did once, it selectively passed on one particular message, which turned out to be important so I was thankful - but the rest are sitting on my ISPs server...
Also, does anyone have any idea at all what Error 650 is? When I couldn't connect this was the message I received. Error 650, the computer you are trying to connect to cannot accept dial up connection (or something like that). I have spoken to Tech Support on numerous occasions and have been told it is a line fault not an ISP fault. This problem has been referred to British Telecom (twice) but my connection is still unstable. Tech support mentioned something about an ADSL card (?) being faulty at the exchange and all BT might have done is reset the card rather than replace it...
Thanks

Yes, sorry, Outlook Express. And I am getting no error messages either. It connects, authorises, then disconnect reporting no new mail - but there is and I can view it from the server...

*sigh* I guess this is encouraging in a way - thank you I will have to spend another hour on hold to tech support I have also tested this with other Outlook Express mail accounts on this pc (by sending mail between them) and the same is happening to them too.

Oh well if that is case it could be the OE is suppose. Is there anything still there of the old dial up the AOL stuff? What OE have you got (did it come with IE6) ?

Re AOL - I am sure there is nothing left of it on my system...
I am still using IE 5.5, so it is the Outlook Express that comes with that. I have checked my ISPs site and it appears that there have been some mail problems, but my type of account was occasionally known to receive duplicate mail - not no mail at all

Might be worth d/l 6 from Microsoft, it is better anyway

You definately did it in safe mode, if not it won't show up
You might wish to go through Regedit searching for AOL and it's ilk, just to see what is there?
<edit> You have a dial up, aren't you permanently connected | Yes I did that and it was fine no lurking AOL gremlins
*eek* regedit?? Actually, is it OK that I rely on my McAfee Uninstaller Deluxe to take care of the registry orphans??
re dial up - yes I do have permanent connection but a TCP/IP dial up adaptor (with a microsoft client) is necessary to get online, whether I am permanently on or whether I choose to close down occasionally. If I delete the dial up I get an error 645 (something to do with microsoft) *shrugs* It is not a dial up as such...

It sounds like dial-up networking is very stuffed. You may also want to remove and reinstall the dialup adapter and TCP/IP in your network settings.

@Sleepy - nothing of AOL in the registry
This is the third day of trouble free connection (fingers crossed) I am still having trouble with Outlook though I should brave tech support I guess...what part of the dial up config are you interested in?
@Mr Flibble - thank you My first course of action was to uninstall and reinstall DUN, and the dial up adapter and TCP/IP, but to no effect. Neither did reinstalling Windows help. I have backed up everything now and should it go down again I am prepared to reformat. I don't intend to though if my system stays stable because it is so much work reinstalling programs, patches, mods, downloaded programs etc etc...
