He got it for only $15 from Gateway, something special they were did for everyone who had bought a Gateway that had WinMe on it.

I almost had him convinced not to, but he decided to do so anyway. He's rather computer illiterate, more so with software than with hardware; and doesn't really understand what's wrong with it, no matter how many times I try to explain it to him. I told him that, if he's going to upgrade, go with Win98SE(I consider it an upgrade, no matter what you're upgrading from) instead of WinXP, but he wouldn't listen to me. He's got the attitude of "It's my computer, I can install WinXP on it if I want to." Because of the network(and his being the comp that dials up), it affects mine and mom's computers some(he doesn't believe it does, even though it caused network trouble ), and when there's a problem, I'm the one who has to fix it, but he still thinks it only affects him. *sigh*

Well, my new comp is here, so as soon as I finish backing some stuff up, I'm going to shut down and put it together. How soon I get back on will depend on how much trouble I have.

Well, I've been playing IWD(w/o HoW) on my laptop. I wonder what it'll look like on my new computer.

If you really love your father, you will get one of those MiB things and flash him so he forgets that he ever got Windows XP. Gateway probably sent him the Home Edition, which some guys downstairs in my building absolutely hate. They say it's buggy and has a lot of hardware compatibility issues.

I wish I could.

He's happy because it's supposed to be stable.

Sadly, it doesn't. I hooked everything up(correctly, too!) and I went to turn it on and nothing happened. I've got a friend from church who knows a lot about computers(I think his job is making chips for Intel) over trying to figure out what the problem is. So far, looks like it came with a bad power supply.

I don't know about the home edition, but I am running professional, and have had no problems......

I guess it depends on who you ask. Personally, I won't go back to win 9x. I have been running professional for awhile, and love it. However, I have heard there are certain hardware issues, such as you have to activate the OS, and once you do it kinda ties itself in with your hardware. Basically, if you uprade a lot, you wind up having to call Microsoft to reactivate the OS because after so many changes, it just locks you out.

I don't know the specifics, I am using it on a liscence we have through the college where I work, so we are exempt from that feature. It's a good thing we are liscecsed for work AND home use.

Microsoft was SUPPOSED to address that issue, but who knows?

I consider microsoft to be the "best of the bad," and I think Win98SE is the best OS they've got. That's why I bought it(paid $80) to install on my new computer.

Just my feeling--but I remain perfectly happy with 98. And a friend of mine, who built my current computer (a professional, with his own shop), has tried to enthusiastically interest me in XP. But the few new features don't seem terribly interesting to me, while it hogs more resources and moves more slowly than its predecessors.

If you want an unbiased Q&A about XP, try this website: http://www.scotfinnie.com/newsletter/14.htm#winxprep

Scot's a friend (and former editor) of mine. (Former, because Windows Magazine, where I used to work was in the end, as Scot put it, an editorial success and a business failure--this despite being a newstand success as a print mag for more than a decade.) His comments are pertinent well-researched.

80 bucks? either that is cheap, or they are seriously overcharging around my area.

I can get the uprade version for about 80. Actually, I can't find the full version anywhere local.

My dad thinks that only young people don't like Windows XP, but I knew he was wrong!

Hmm...fable and I both agree on the XP issue. We must be right.
