defragmentation of hardrive pls help

I cant defrag my computer.

When I try to do it, it says run scandisk or CHKDSK.

So i search for them and find the program CHKDSK and run it, then I try to defrag again and it gives me the same error message (pls run scandisk or CHKDSK).

In dire need of help. Does anyone know how I can defrag my hardrive?

What operative system are you using, and from where/how do you call the defragmentation function?

windows xp. This computer, control panel, maintenance and then defrag

My Computer > Right-click hard drive and select Properties > Tools > and click the Check Now button in the Error-checking (top) section.

You may have to reboot in order for the scan to run but you should receive a notice stating such.
