Blue screen crashes with Win2k

OK, I may as well post this here, there's really very little chance of one of you guys having the solution, but no chance is better than none.

I'm getting BSODs in Win2k (Service Pack 3). Now this really shouldn't happen, the only BSODs I've ever seen while using this OS are as a direct result of this problem. Here is the message I get on the freeze:

I asked around, and actually found someone who had heard of the problem (from very little info, he pretty much told me what the error msg was - irc.quakenet.org channel #help is one of the best resources in the world IMO) and directed me to the following sites that gave me some info:

The last is the semi-jackpot, there are several people there with this same problem, Windows 2000 and a variety of network cards. Mine is a Netgear FA311, which makes things rather more difficult - the other main offender, the Linksys, has had a driver solution made by the company, but the Netgear card has not had such luck. I have emailed them, however it would seem that others have tried and failed.

"Install Service Pack 3" isn't the most useful advice, since I've done that

At this point, any helpful suggestions would be useful - these crashes are seemingly completely random, coming as they do every few hours or not for days, even when my computer is just standing idle (still online though), but they are extremely annoying. The closest I can figure is that there was something in that servie pack that din't quite agree with your computer configuration. Try uninstalling the service, run a defrag, and use a freeware probram that cleans out spyware and unused applications.

I had a similar problem, and thats what I did to fix it, though I am using XP, so that might've had something to do with it.

The problem here is Win2k is looking at a piece of hardware (in this case it looks like a network adapter) at a certain IRQ value. If the currently assigned value is greater than what has previously been set you get those nice BSOD's. You should be able to fix this one by going into your system BIOS and reset the ESCD data. That forces the system to reassign IRQ's to all the hardware which Win2k will pick up on the next reboot.

mmmm lately I have the same problem, I was able however to play bdg2 and nvwn perfectly untill recently. naturally it's the service pack causing the problem but atm I am hessitent of reinstalling my entire software (since I just did that).

I'll try the bios thing but tbh well maybe it's a sign not to play the games AGAIN :P

In the last 5 months I've learnt a lot about BSODs, post your system specs and I'll have a look

Alternatively, do what Mr Flibble says up there - 'tis very good advice.

Well I got my unix nic card dun remember if it's onboard tho but dun think so.

And the most obvious problem is it being on the irq 9 together with my sblive platinum so that's most likely the problem, I can start the game but as soon as the nic does something new ie. start a new download and such it will kill off the game. However I can play everything else EXCEPT bioware games lolz, I tried nvwn bdg2 and iwd2 but all crash with a blue screen. Problem is I got no desire to fidget in my bios or to change things within win2k itself since it's running smoothly atm except for those 3 games. I wanna look atm if it's possible to manage it under win2k itself and otherwise I'll have to look into the bios sigh hate that. Allways think the worst will happen then.

If you've got an SB Live! PCI card - easiest thing to do is change the PCI slot it's in - instant IRQ reassignment, but you will have to reinstall/reconfigure the drivers. I'm not quite sure why it's only with Bioware games - something in their programming must be calling that interrupt more often than anything else does - that or you just play a lot more of them

I got no idea but I got counterstrike, vice city, Diablo 2 and those work just fine, it's indeed the bioware games not working but indeed putting my sb in another pci slot would do the thing however it's so incredibly tedious to do so especially if it's for just those three games and with my luck either bioware or microsoft will release a patch the day after I have it fixed. Ah well when the desire becomes to great and I want to create Gatz the berserker with bdg2, nvwn or iwd2 then I'll take the effort but for now if there ain't no easy quickfix no thanks :P Just got it all fixed and would be to much hassle :P
