I am wondering how the numbers are calculated when it comes to critical strikes. Specifically, when you have something like an opila gem (Damage: +3, Massive Criticals: 2-12) and you score a crit., does that damage get added to the your total, and then it is all multiplied? Or is your total multiplied first, and then the Massive Critical bonus is simply tacked on at the end?

I guess I am just wondering what number specifically is considered your "total" when there are other factors like gems adding to your weapon damage, or feats like power attack, and at what point that "total" is multiplied.

Thank you all once again for sharing your fabulous insight and knowledge with me.

As far as I recall from the rulebook - Massive Critical doesn't get multiplied but added on top of the multiplier result.
+Damage should be multiplied in criticals.

It's been some time though, so I might be remembering wrong.

That's correct, Xandax.

In normal D&D, all fixed damage and your base damage gets multiplied in the crit. Things like Sneak Attack, extra damage dice, etc, do not.
So your 1d8 + 10 damage gets doubled, but your 2d6 sneak attack not. A critical would be 2d8 + 20 + 2d6 damage.
I'm not sure how this works in KotOR, though.

Excellent. Thanks everyone. That makes sense and it is what I was suspecting. So that would mean that things like Power Attack would simply be added after the critical multiplier right? Suffice to say, all sources outside the character equip screen are added afterward.

No, Power Attack is fixed damage, so it gets multiplied.
Anything with a dice (apart from your base weapon) doesn't get multiplied. Fixed numbers do.

I guess I have to bring up this older topic again. I was looking at the Mandalorian Ripper:
Damage: Unstoppable, 3-8
Critical Threat: 18-20,x2
Attack Modifier: +2

If I were to upgrade this with a Pure Rylith Power Cell (Damage: Energy +2-20) for example, what happens when a critical strike is scored?

The question goes for all situations like this when there is damage of different types on a single weapon. Do they all add up in the end and then get multiplied? Or is it done differently?

I only know how pen&paper D&D works, on which this is based, so here's my best guess:
Like you said earlier, a good idea is to look at your character screen and see what's listed as "base damage" there, something like 5-28, for that ripper with that energy cell. That base damage gets multiplied, everything that isn't there and the "extra damage on a crit", doesn't. Keep in mind that Power Attack, when activated, is added to the base damage.
The most common extra damage that isn't listed, is probably Sneak Attack.

In short, all those upgrades that say "adds xxx extra damage" get multiplied in a crit.
