Kotor PC Mods

I've decided i'm going to purchase Kotor 1 and 2 for my PC since i heard it's better then the X-Box versions, but i also have a few questions about it...

1. What exactly is a mod ? and how do i use them ? and are there any risk's in downloading them ?

2. Is there unlimited leveling up in Kotor 1 for the PC version ? i know for X-box your character can only go up to level 21.

3. Is there a way to use Mods for the X-Box versions ?

Appreciate it if anybody can answer these questions for me, thanks.
