Question Your Favourite Instant Messaging Programme

I have had a number of different conversations with people about the merits and drawbacks of the various Instant Messaging programmes out there.

Personally I have only used ICQ and MSN, and I frequently will have both open simultaneously. I generally prefer ICQ because there is no character limit (if you use the full rather than light version), and the chat rooms (slightly different to the IM option you can also use) allow you to actually see your partner typing. What I mean is, you can actually see the words as they are written, as opposed to MSN which simply tells you the person is typing.
However, MSN tends to be far more stable, especially when more than two people are chatting in the same "room," it has a nicer look, and I like the smilies better

Other opinions?

I don't use any, and fail to see their worth. And unfortunally "Spim" is starting to become a bigger problem also after from what I read/heard/seen.

It even took quite some time for me to get MS Messenger uninstalled - lousy no-good malware

E-mails work plenty fine for me

Edit: no possible choice for me in the poll, so haven't voted.

Oops, sorry about that! Feel free to go in and edit the poll, so that there is an option that states, "I don't use IM programmes"

I believe Buck has sent all moderators an e-mail regarding such topics

As for me, I use MSN, simply because the majority of people I know, and talk to, use MSN.

Trillian is rumored to be very unstable. It crashes computers and generally isn't worth it. Ask BS.

I really think everyone here should checkout Miranda. It's THE best client out there IMO and I have tried all the above and more (aMSN is also a nice program but alas only works on Linux. Miranda is plugin based and opensource so any protocol (ICQ,MSN,Jabber,AOL,Yahoo etc) can be used in it. It is also fully skinnable with a huge plugis/skin database at their web site.... and the best part is that it's totally free

Miranda looks interesting.... but I have to admit, I'm a little bothered by the spy software ads at the site... I know an ad is just an ad, and that they help to pay for a product that is free... but even so...
Yes.. I know that children need to be protected from the darker aspects of the net.. but I have a real kneeejerk reaction against any organisation that promotes spying on others.. regardless the context.

Sorry, I know that is totally off topic, but I couldn't help notice those links when I clicked onto the Miranda page....

Where did you find those ads? the only ads I see is the ones for sourceforge and nethosting are they popups? cause I block all popups, and hence would not get souch ads....

I use MSN, I did use to use ICQ but I heard from someone that they had gotten a virus through it. Looking back I think it was from someone, not the IM though.
