I don't think they're supposed to implement it without High Court approval (as the legislation draws on Constitutiinal provisions, the Corporations Act IIRC) but since when has that stopped ideological extremists with unimpeded majorities in government? Bush isn't supposed t domestically wiretap without warrants, but it still happens.
I hope you're right about the merit thing...

Who says there is no point in trying? The French government has withdrawn the policy which led to this opposition today

It is strange. A country that's all crushed because of his lack of social mobility and dynamics on the job market gets back due to a bunch of students (who should think twice before wanting a job for their lives instead of several jobs where they'd be able to grow and stuff). I dont really understand france anymore, but I can say something: At least they're militants that are ACTIVE for what they want, and that makes me jealous. In Brazil they'd break a few buses, and it'd be over. They're protesting for days... its amazing.

Don't even get me started on the US, there'd be National Guard mowing down innocent bystanders if so much as a window broke.

Yeah, here too. They'd pick you up and beat you behind the car so that the TV cameras wouldnt be able to see you being beaten. *sigh*. Democracy my butt.

Sad aint it? Unfortunately here that happens everyday, not just for public protest: if the cops don't like the color of your skin... Watch out.
It's especially bad in Detroit, probably the worst city pound-for-pound in North America north of Mexico. At least LA and NYC have some good to go with the bad: all Detroit has are really good BAsketball and Hockey teams.

We could certainly use a good ol' riot right now. We in the U.S. haven't been shaken up a lot in our lives. We pretty much have December 7th, September 11th, the civil rights movement, JFK blown away, what else do I have to say? (Sorry, Billy Joel just came naturally) We can use some good shaking up because we certainly don't get enough of it. We're pretty complacent; 9/11 did a lot to shake us out of that, but we're already starting to get complacent again if we aren't already. And if there's one thing some one can take advantage of, it's the people being complacent. As long as nothing disturbs the status quo, they can almost do whatever the heck they want.
