(Sigh!) Another one of those conspiracy theories is suppose... I've heard from some people that an "inside job" is probable but hey, almost anything is possible --- within the valid limits, of course.
My following opinion is on the assumption that BL's group is the one responsible. This is based on the argument that you presented if a war between the U.S. and Afghanistan would happen.
The way I see it, Bin Laden's group makes these other organizations look like Mickey Mouse Club. Consider the base of operations of his group (world-wide, compared to IRA's United Kingdom and Northern Ireland), their logistics, networking and not to mention the fanaticism involved among its members. THESE PEOPLE ARE NOT AFRAID TO DIE FOR THEIR CAUSE. Being driven by (misguided? Faz, if you read this, correct me if I'm wrong) faith, they would embrace death willingly and with passion knowing that they will be exalted by their god in the afterlife. For them death is sweeter when it involves killing the enemies of their faith.
I really don't think that the other countries you mentioned would not care any less. They have to, since if this war does happen there would be a domino effect and the world will be polarized into two groups. Support for each group would not necessarily mean actual combat assistance. No, this is not an isolated conflict if it will come to that.
"Marketing" or not, you just cannot downplay an event that caused 5,000(?) deaths of innocent people within a matter of minutes. The overwhelming majority were not even soldiers. Those who died were not just Americans. The buildings were not called World Trade Center for nothing. I would understand the Pentagon being one of the targets, but NYC? |
