A new dangerous virus named "MyDoom" is spreading on the Internet this week. To quote a member of McAfee's Anti-Virus Emergency Response Team, "the virus writers [are]...back from vacation..." "MyDoom" is especially malicious. It has the ability to allow hackers to install a keystroke program on infected computers and record sensitive data being typed, eg. passwords, credit card numbers, etc.
"MyDoom", is also appearing as "Novarg" or "WORM_MIMAIL.R". It is a particularly sneaky email worm as it has been maliciously disguised as a legitimate error or failure message. While most Internet users know not to open .exe attachments. "MyDoom" has different file extensions, including .pif, .zip and .csr. It also uses an attachment icon similar to a Windows attachment icon. All of this is tricking many people into thinking the email is legitimate.
After relatively few new viruses, last week's "Bagle" worm and now "MyDoom" have spread at an unprecedented speed. MessageLabs, based in Britain, reported that they are seeing "MyDoom" in 1 out of 12 emails. By comparison, back in August, the SoBig virus, which caused havoc around the world, was tracked at only 1 in 17 emails. For more information on "MyDoom" visit http://www.nwd42.com/t.asp?N=Mf_bLP_...FBHBBLEDQVEFAB$LP .

just be cautious with your emails and keep your virus definitions up to date and you'll be fine. The payload of the virus is minor but the code is crafty.

This virus is simple in techonolgy. It dosen't exploit some weakness in mail-program or internet explore.
It requiers the user to actually click on an attached file on the email.
I have little sympathy for users of the internet that does that - and thus get infected by such a virus.
People should know better now.

Yeah, they should know better... but I also know people that are reasonably savvy who sometimes click on these things. It can be easy to forget. Especially if you are at work or something and have a million different things on the go
Well... if you have a memory like mine anyway...

Well... if you have a memory like mine anyway... | Yes - it is easy to forget not to click attacments from people you know, or attachments that you know what is.
Spreading viras have been done like this for ages, infect a program, get it to a user, user opens it - presto.
That is why, when I send attachments, I usually write in the email, what file type it is, its name and what size it has. Then people will know what I'm sending them (if I want them to, buwahahahAHAHAHA ... *cough*, nevermind that last part)
But I have a hard time understanding how somebodys thoughtprocess is when they decide to open an attachment. It is much like driving withouth the seatbelt off (well - I know that many do this also, but doens't mean I can understand them )
Never ever open up files you haven't ask for, or otherwise comes from somebody you trust not to be infected. I got a group of about 3-4 people I trust not to get infected, but that doesn't mean I open up everything from them either

For those with no anti virus, Symantec has launched a vaccine to erradicate it, and it is free. Name? FxNovarg.
I have the file, but it is no hard to find it , I just dunno if it protects against the two variants of this one infection. One of them is going to atack one site and the second is going to atack microsoft's site, form what I've heard.

Thoese with no anti-virus should seriously think of getting one. With all the vira that are floating around on the net it is a big safety risk for both one self and others, if you surf "unprotected"

And just for the record, the Ancient Assyrians considered Weasel a plague. When you think about what they were like, that's saying something.
