| | | Things look different! Hey everyone, I'm back. Its been about 22 weeks since I was last here. I hope everyone still posts.
Basic Training at Ft Sill was great fun. Except for the no sleep. And the Drill Sargents. And being sick the whole time . I had pneumonia for a while, that was a blast. I then went for more training at Ft Bliss, which was fun because they would sometimes let us out on the weekends.
I'm on ten days leave now. I'm being stationed at Ft Bliss, Tx. Just about all of the friends I made are going to Germany or Korea, so I'm a little sad. I'm with my family back here in Ohio.
So has anything big happened while I was gone? Any monumental changes in the board? I haven't been able to keep up on games and such, anything exciting there? I got to watch some movies on the weekends. I really liked Hero and Resident Evil 2, althought the first RE movie was better.
Anyway, I'm glad to be back, and I hope you all are glad to hear from me again. (I'll never forgive you all if you don't remember me )

| | @Zelgadis: Ft. Sill, Oklahoma? Artillery?
Feel blessed that you're not having to pull a 12 month hardship tour in Korea, my friend. It's not all it's cut out to be, and I for one was glad I never had to do time there. Germany, on the other hand, is great. You can request to be assigned there, you know. Let your platoon sergeant or First Sergeant know you want to put in for a European assignment the next time you PCS. Myself, I had requested the UK, Belgium, and Germany. The chances for either the UK or Belgium are slim, since those are primarily NATO support slots and the waiting lists for them are a mile-long (and if you don't have a critical MOS for those, forget it). However, Germany is a sure-fire bet, since just about every MOS in the Army is there. (I went to Germany as my second duty station, waaaaay out in wine country about half an hour from the French-German border, in the Saarland)
Also, when you enlisted, did you have an option for a guaranteed CONUS (CONtinental United States) assignment right off? That could be why your first assignment after training is in the US, instead of overseas. I had that as an option, and my first duty assignment was Ft. Lewis, Washington, not too far from where DW lives in British Columbia, Canada. Also, when you get out, you'll more than likely have as your last assignment the same place you are assigned right now.
(In case you weren't aware, I was in the Army from 1989-1993, back when they made us run 100 miles every morning and paid us $50 a week )
Welcome back, btw.

@Chanak: Yep, Ft Sill the artillery base. It was fun, when I wasn't passed out from exhaustion or insensible from pain, , I could listen to the firing of artillery off in the distance. And they brought us to watch howitzers and stuff fire a few times. The Drill Sargeants told us that a lot of changes were made to the Basic Training course across the army, so it was probably a lot less hard than what you experienced, and it wasn't actually much of a challenge until I got real sick.
I hear the odds of me going anywhere other than Korea of Ft Bliss are slim. I work with the patriot missles, and they can only go to Korea, Bliss, of Germany, and I hear they are taking a lot of units out of germany. But they might be opening a few other bases CONUS to patriot, like Hawaii , so I have some hopes for the future. Ft Bliss is to hot for my taste, I want a place where it snows.

I've been searching for information about you for ages!!! Glad you're back I'm sure YOU don't remember me, though, b/c I wasn't even here when you left . It's just your name that caught my attention and wanted to ask you why you chose it. And then I read your posts and figured out that you're gone for a looong training....
So even if nobody else remembers you, I'm very much interested in you story

| | @Zelgadis: My last unit was a Patriot Missile Battery...HHB 9th ADA, in fact, which was deactivated not very long after I got out in '93 (the entire 9th Division was deactivated as part of the drawdown after Desert Shield/Storm). Small world, huh? I was in communications, but they would put us anywhere. My first assignment was HHB, 9th Division Artillery...and my last assignment was HHB 9th ADA. Those Artillery First Sergeants can be downright mean sometimes. I think that might be due to the time they spent as SFCs in line batteries.
To show how even smaller the world is Zel, I worked at Lockheed Martin making parts for the brains of the Patriot Missile last year. A guy I worked with there was with Patriots during his time in the Army. LOL!

| | I made an attempt to look it up before asking, if you want to know - the dictionary I usually use didn't work, nor did Britannica.

| | You expect me to walk around in that long black dress, right?! (Btw, I didn't find the English word for that dress either, b/c the dictionary mentioned above didn't work - how am I supposed to find a Hungarian word in an English dictionary?! )
