Purely on a technical level, the trumpets lead up to the period of the beast-power; this is after the seventh trumpet releases the four horsemen (war plague, famine & death). And it is prior to the seventh trumpet that the 144,000 elect are sealed. So the "hey there ain't been no rapture" argument is fallacious.
Of course, that does not mean that this is actually the hallmark of the 6th trumpet. The 5th trumpet if of a corrupting army bringing pain and suffering. I have not seen anything remotely like this.
And the 6th trumpet is of a destroying army - 200 Million strong. I don't think a pair of buildings and a few thousand dead can even be though to equate to the promised third of all men (about 2 billion today).
