so it seems that it is that time that we have our olympic festivities again, this year being held in Greece... Its simply heartwarming and uplifting to me to be able to see so many countries, so many nationalities, being able to get along peacefully, with only the competitions to be the possible discomfort to the gathering. i love the olympics.... seeing the world being able to be friendly with one another, and being able to let the differances go, even if it is for a short time...... makes me think that we may eventually see a time where there is complete world peace and brotherhood, and we dont have to send our brothers, our sisters, our cousins, aunts, uncles, and any other loved ones into war, maybe it will happen within our lifetime, maybe not in our life time, but hopefully sometime, even if it be centuries, we may finally see peace
so here i go rambling on, i tend to think about this issue about every 4 years, lol, but was just wondering if people feel the same, or have different views when they watch this world gathering?

I read in the news that at the presentation day, american athletes were mostly booed while iraquian athletes were given a standing ovation.
Well, I guess differences aren't forgotten, even in this world event.
As for soccer, I also read that Portugal lost to Iraq. Well done Iraq!

The Irani Judo champion has left the competition because he was gonna play/fight against the israeli candidate in his first bout. So much for the idea that the olympics brings nations together.

That actually wouldnt be far from the truth as Greece is the number one country in the world where more americans are attacked or murdered (dont remember) yearly than any other place in teh world.

Meh- as far as I'm concerned, an Olympics without John Williams music is hardly worth watching. Neither is one without Dubya waving at Stevie Wonder.

I think at most about 100 from South Africa. No female swimmers from here, which is pretty amazing. Then again, we do have when it comes to the paralympics.
What were your views on the opening ceremony?

The spirit of the Olympic is great - in theory. In practice every olympics seem to be plagued by corruption and doping. Specially in the judging sports you always get the feeling that skill was not the final factor in determine the winner.
Only in this OS there have been a number of controversies in for example gymnastics. If you could be certain that no money were involved and everything was fair, watching it would be much more fun. As it is now, it far to often just makes me angry.

| | I can only say, I hope the US Basketball teams doesn't win jack. One day some people will realize team sports means more than one. I can only hope these people go broke in the process of learning.

well while you are all taking a steaming dump on the olympic spirit, i would like to point out last nights highbar competion, during which, a bulgarian (or russian?) competitor, perfornmed tremendously, and was scored lowly, the whole crowd; not just the bulgarians, booed, the descision, even the countries whose athletes would be denied a medal because of it, even the ATHLETES who would be denied a medal because of it. Thats what the olympics for ye
*end rant*

@giles337: Yes, thats exactly what I'm talking about. The gymnast in question is Alexei Nemov, and he is russian. Despite having a very similar program to Paul Ham, his first score was almost 0.1 points lower. Igor Cassina (Ita) who as far as I and the swedish commentator could see did a better program than both of them where awarded the same score as Paul Ham. This years gymnastics have been filled with such events.
I agree it was very nice to see the reaction of the audience though. It was also good to see a worthy winner in Igor Cassina.
