Come, come along. Hurry now. The last sliver of the solar disk is settling beyond the hills, and you will need the light of Apollo to find your way. Many a traveler has attempted the ascent alone, and their torchlight snuffed, stumbled to their deaths. The oracle awaits. No! I sha’nt follow. I have made the journey and know my fate. This is a passage you must make on your own.

Follow the path eastward, and find the rope where it drops beneath the earth. At the bottom is a passage. Too small to walk upright; you will need to crawl. The air is moist and heavy, but you must make time. When you emerge is the ascent. It’s unmarked, but from here, the oracle will draw you too him…

And as you go forth into the alien landscape, razor-sharp rocks threatening to turn your slightest misstep into tragedy, you feel a sense of foreboding unequal to any feeling you have ever experienced - save for the anticipation of truly knowing your future. But you have made it this far, so you know the tales. You know what awaits. The oracle at Mount Parnassus, Waverly the Seer.

Time is short, but you perform the ritual sacrifice prior to setting forth, because you know what has happened to those foolish enough to scoff at this primeval precaution. You place the sacred honey cakes in your pockets, knowing will need to hold them in your hands as you shuffle the last meters flat on your back, in full view of the prophet. The mists will drift up from fissures in the earth and thicken, carrying with them whisperings of what is and what shall be.

The Seer sometimes speaks in riddles, or mocks our fates. ‘Tis a small price to pay, so steal yourself and ask your questions.

So what does the Seer see in my future?

A hiss emanates from the fissures in response to the impertinence of young Aegis. He has forgotten that seeing the future involves an element of interaction, and destinies are in their greatest flux when being observed. And in that fateful moment, Apollo frowned upon Aegis, and repaved the path of his fortune into the darkest wood.

It would have been better for you to have never journeyed here, young Aegis. Now that you have, know this: uncertainty blights your path, and you shall wander far and near in doubt. Ultimately, it is your lot to sell used cars on a lonely highway. Your overbearing wife will brain you before your 32nd birthday on the same day you are promoted to jr. asst. supervisor.

Ms. Elegans, you have many destinies, but cannot enjoy them all at once. Decisions await you. To the left Prosperity, but this journey takes you furthest from Fulfillment. To the right, Achievement – the path without Leisure. In between is Balance, but beware, the way is mis-marked. Safe journey! Take comfort that whatever your choice, the Apollo smiles upon you.

Thank you O Great Seer. How can I avoid to follow mismarked paths? Are there any signs of danger I should be aware of?

Hmmm....the Great Seer appears to have gone to a taco stand or something. Perhaps he'll return later, so that I may seek of his wisdom regarding my future. One can but hope.

Remove thyself from Parnassus, low functioning half brother of Yoda.

Fable, your future is cloudy and cannot be clearly seen. The gods warn that you are something other than what you seem, and hesitate to address your inquiry. What is it you hide from the light of the sun? You must be honest with yourself before communing with the oracle. Are you going to eat those honey cakes? They’re un-consecrated, so you may as well leave them here with me.

Ms. Elegans, Apollo knows which paths are mis-marked and how this came to be, but he will not say. Seeing mortals stumble is one of his many petty indulgences. I wish I could help more. Perhaps you could plant a laurel on the sacred isle of Delos – in lieu of that maybe a bottle of fine wine and a wide screen television left as offerings might loosen his tongue.

If you mean the beef wellington I'm concealing my back, I suppose I could leave it as an offering, particularly as you've discerned its presence supernaturally, O Great Seer. And if it really came down to it, I suspect the babyback pork ribs in my backpack, and the bread pudding dragging behind my python boots, could also be left behind in your sanctum.

You must be honest with yourself before communing with the oracle. Are you going to eat those honey cakes? They’re un-consecrated, so you may as well leave them here with me.

But of course. Is there anything else, or have I been forthcoming sufficiently for the gods to reveal my future?
