| | | The NFL Draft Thread Well, football fans, the NFL draft starts this Saturday at noon (EST) and the Cincinnat Bengals are on the clock. From what I've read, they're negotiating exclusively with the agent for Carson Palmer, signaling that no one wanted to trade and that they're intent on ruining another prospective QB's football career.
Any other draft thoughts?
Who will be the sure-things in the draft?
Who will be the busts?
Who will be the hidden gems?

Who will be the hidden gems? | Well I think that Palmer will be a bust. There are a few reasons for me saying that, but thats primarily a gut feeling that he wont be what the Bengals are hoping for.
Sure thing? Well I figure there are no sure things. There are always strange circumstances that could obscure even the most sound picks. But Ill look into some of the names again to refresh my memory tomorrow night, I think. There is a question about all of the big names. But there are always questions...
Another thought: Damn...I hope Dallas doesnt get Leftwich...damn Cowboys...
Gems?: My first thought would be Iowa's old QB Brad Banks...but there will be some less obvious ones. I remember an Arizona State WR out there...he is forgoing his senior year for the draft...I have forgotten his name though...

I wish they hadn't dealt with the Redskins at all. They didn't give a good enough deal for the Lavernues Coles trade (and I don't think they should have traded him in the first place - he's a great player), and now the arbitrator made them give the Skins Chad Morton as well, who I consider to be the best kick returner in the NFL.
Current predictions are that the Jets will take OLB Boss Bailey (Georgia) and WR Kelley Washington (Tennessee) in the first two picks.
What I think we need for the offense: FB, LG or RT.
What I think we need for the defense: almost everything, I think our depth sucks, esp. in LT, RLB, and SS.
NY Giants
Definitely need to dump Dayne and get another RB. However, I've heard they are not going to do that yet. They just signed free agent Dorsey Levens.
They also signed another kicker, which they desperately needed.
I think that they will concentrate on beefing up the defense - it just isn't what it used to be. I predict the giants will select DT Ty Warren from TX A&M in the first round, and Guard Vince Manuwai (Hawaii) in the second round, since they probably won't have to trade up to get them. Accorsi loves the speed of the Miami defense, so they might pick McDougle or Squall.

| | Cry me a river Voo...get an board the Washinton Jets train , you know you want to
I thin Palmer and Rogers are pretty much locked into the first two picks. Heven't looked at the draft order, so don't know who might fit in where.
A couple observations though....if Suggs slides due to his awful workouts, somebody is gonna wind up getting a steal with this guy. The kid can play his butt off, I dont care what the clock says. Same thing goes forMcGahee....he's the best RB out there, coming off an injury or not.
My team already had their draft, the got the pick of the jets roster But, sadly, they let Davis go and picked up Trung Fumble. Sad look for the coming season.
@Ty...I hope the same as you do, but dallas falls in a good spot to pick up Leftwich (who will be better than Palmer) If they don't pick him up, I look for the Ravens to snatch him. Cards need everything, and will get nothing. Same as always

| | | This a QB-rich draft and I think the two biggest busts are going to be Carson Palmer and Kyle Boller. Both are good guys, but they've had one (or less) good seasons. I see three other guys having NFL careers longer than both: Byron Leftwich, Dave Ragone and Seneca Wallace.
Leftwich has the problems with his leg, although those appear to be past and Ragone and Wallace may not be playing QB after they're drafted, but I just think Palmer and Boller were flashes in the pan that will fizzle in the NFL. I also think Rex Grossman, Ken Dorsey and Brad Banks could do well if they get into the right system.
I just don't see enough performance to justify taking either Palmer or Boller with first-round picks, and I think the teams that get them either need to let each sit on the sidelines for a year (and take the PR flak for spending millions of dollars on a benchwarmer) or they'll be looking at Akili Smith or Ryan Leaf all over again.

Well there is the draft order...Rogers should go second, I agree. DET needs a WR with the skill of Rogers. And unless DET pulls a Bengals move, we now know the top 2 choices.
Up through the Jets (13th), it seems all the first teams need anyone they can get. Should be a fun draft.
This draft has lots of QB talent, whereas last year was the year of the TE.
We shall see.

| | | Several mock drafts I've seen show Dallas being content to mold Chad Hutchinson in to their QB of the future, the Jaguars taking Leftwich and Baltimore taking Boller.
The Bears and Cards both need QBs, but I don't think they'll take one in the first round.

| | | Can I ask what question of this bastardised form of football? How is the draft organised? On what principle do teams get picked? And what is the principles of draft?

I dont think that injury will effect him, and he should be in top shape. He is going to be big, I predict. Hutchinson showed potential, and indeed made many rookie mistakes, but all that is correctable. But I dont see where the thought is to skip over such talent. But, hey, I hope that mock draft is correct
Yes, the Bears and ARZ need lots of help everywhere. I was thinking that CHI could play spoiler for the DAL Leftwich party.
I hope the Jets and Cowboys get the busts of this years draft, of course.

And what is the principles of draft? | Teams can also be awarded compensatory picks based on the number and performance of players they lost the year before through free agency (don't ask for specifics; the details can be found in the NFL's collective bargaining agreement).
The draft consists of 262 picks, and each team rates the players (over a thousand) who submit thier names to the NFL for the draft based on their previous performance, potential for future performance and the potential to improve from their current ability/skill.
How each team evaluates players varies, but teams generally draft to their need. For instance, the Detriot Lions invested a lot of money in drafting quarterback Joey Harrington last year. He didn't perform spectacularly (as well as may be expected from a first-year QB), but the Lions won't be looking to draft a QB, no matter how high one grades for them.
Some teams also choose to draft the best player available regardless of need (the Vikings used to do this when Dennis Green was head coach/GM), but with the salary cap, most just draft based on what they need.
The draft last for 7 rounds and because some teams trade players or coaches for draft picks or are awarded compensatory picks, each team usually has between 4 and 10 picks throughout the 7 rounds.

| | Check out the ESPN TMQB mock draft for a laugh or two and some more pix of Flanders's favourite redheaded Chargers cheerleader.
I saw Mel Kiper, Jr. (and his hair) on ESPN News today yapping about half a dozen linemen may be selected in the first round. That's good news for teams close to the salary cap; they'll get a high quality player who can make a quick contribution plus they'll pay him less since "unskilled" positions are on a lower pay scale.
