Here is a subject for discussion -
Why the hell are kids' shows so weird?
It is such a common thing that it often becomes a joke, but I would like to know.
Tellytubbies, The Smurfs, The Magic Roundabout, and worst of all The Moomins...
These shows are all remarkably bizarre, and I wonder why television people do not think that kids will turn out better if they show them even slightly comprehensible shows....
So discuss away - Stupid commens and genuine psychological analysis both welcome, but stay on topic.

I have not yet seen Moomins - but I can speak directly to the teletubbies phenomenon. I have two children under the age of five who both enjoyed teletubbies.
Teletubbies is a show aimed at children under the age of four and therefore has bright colors, only a few characters, tons of repitition, and simple dialogue and narration. This show is aimed at keeping the attention of young children - and does a very good job of it as I can attest to from personal experience.
As far as kids turning out better or worse - I don't feel that most of these shows have any negative effect on children. In fact - teletubbies may have the positive effect of teaching children very simple lessons in the areas of deductive reasoning, social skills, and simple mathematics. My five year old watched teletubbies at least once a day for about a year and she is doing very well in kindergarten - in fact she has a great attention span and reasons at a very high level for her age - I don't think teletubbies was responsible for this - but it certainly caused no harm.
To answer your question "Why the hell are kids' shows so weird?" - It is because - in the case of teletubbies - they are made for kids. What an adult finds bizarre is not relevant when discussing these shows. The old attage - "if its too loud you are too old" can be modified to "if you find the show bizarre - you are too old"

| | | I have absolutely no idea how the hell a show like the tubbies can turn popular... Dude, watching that show is like being beaten to a pulp verbally, or rather being tormented a 1000 times in hell watching 7th heaven over and over again.
I simply canīt find anything more depressing to think about than those kiddies shows.

@Jaesha - My 2 year old feels the same way about Law and order, american idol, Friends, the history channel, CNBC - and any other show that does not contain colorful, furry creatures, Mike Wizowski, or scooby doo.
These shows are not made for you - and you should detest them - when you have kids you will appreciate the shows ability to distract them for a half hour so you can read the frickin paper.

Ainīt no o' that anymore, Iīm telling ya. Also, the need for computeranimated effects in the shows is just brrrr.....

I saw Barney and Teletubbies a few times as a child and never liked them. They were stupid and I couldn't stand their dancing and colors. Sesame Street was my favorite.
But kid shows are wierd. Maybe they're meant to help kids develop a greater imagination. Anyway I loved the 80's kids shows. They were great.

I just wanted to mention a few of the "for kids" type cartoons that are not really for kids.
Shows like Dexter's Laboratory, Cat/Dog, and Ed, Edd, and Eddy, Courage the cowardly dog - and basically any other show on the cartoon network. These shows feature themes and humor that is way above most kids heads.
I have watched some of these with my daughters and they can be hilarious - but my kids don't really follow the jokes that well. So if you are looking for a more "intelligent" brand of humor in your cartoons - check these out.

I liked the show but it got a bit boring after a while. He never could get anything done, although I liked the sinister version of the Count.
I hate/loath Cow and Chicken and the new age Cartoon Network toons. Johnny Bravo is good and Dexter's Lab used to be good but they are the only two.

On the subject of "weird" cartoons, I'd like to nominate Ren&Stimpy too
