SYM History - For Newbies

As I am leaving SYM for good, because you lot always hug me! If you promise not to hug me any more I will stay. If I get another hug I am off and migrating to Argyle! Anyway as I am leaving SYM for good, I though I may do something for the newbies. Here below is the Compendium of SYM history. From its humble starting with the Goody thread to its present day form. I will explain all the different groups, the major events in its history and the lore and traditions of this strange and extremely kinky world.

Nothing to take away from what AC did, but this is for the newbies.

AC Thread can be seen here: AC’s Thread

The Beginning

Baldur’s Gate
The reason a majority of the people are here is due to BG and BG2. They are the reason for the existence of SYM and in general why GB exists. Notice that BG is GB backwards. Coincidence? I think not…the Gods wanted GB to exist after BG 2 came out. When BG2 came out GB was a small community with 3 or 4 forums. So there was no SYM…until goody that is.

Honorable Mention: BG Dungeon This was by far the largest BG forum out there. When it was shut down many came to GB and later on to SYM. Fable and Stilgar are originally from the Dungeon. I just thought it deserved an mention because some posters or the original vets were there at one point or another.

Goody
Now Goody as the thread is lovingly referred to as, was the precursor to SYM and the first thread to hit 40 pages and the first thread that purely spam. Nothing but spam in that thread and everything that could be considered a variation of spam. Due to the huge amount of spam in Goody, Buck Satan, the man himself, decided the rabble that we are deserved to be banished to the lowest level of hell.

If you notice BG is one of the first forums you see. Before the Gamebanshee news items etc, it was the first. While SYM is at the very bottom. Buck didn’t want us around as you can see. So we were banished to the lower depths of hell and SYM was created for us and the spam with in.

Point to Note: A nice portion of lore for the newbies is the Banned Bassie episode. Buck is very strict about banning and in my opinion very very fair in his bans. It is almost always necessary to enforce the rules and rules if they are there need to be enforced. Anyway Bassie was a member that caused a lot of trouble. Well it was a lot in the old days when SYM was not around. He was banned, and kept coming back under various names. The one that lives in every one’s fondest memories is when he arrived as Banned Bassie and stated

Quote:
I would like to say something before I get banned again!

Can I please say something before I get banned again? 1 post please...

Give me one day to say something and I will be happy and gone.

Lore: Some interesting points in the beginning that were fun and people still talk about this. I refer to this as lore as it is part of the history while the Banned Bassie was a one off. I have added what I have heard the most about. If something is not here add it or pm me.

Sly Weasel: Weasel as you may have read or heard is a prolific topic of discussion at SYM. For his ways with sheep and words. There was a period when a very different version of weasel, Sly weasel was around. He was well, lets just say we are very much happy that Sly weasel doesn’t post much anymore. The less said the better in my opinion about Sly Weasel.

Weasel broke the boards: Well this is a first I believe in internet history, but Weasel actually brought GB to its knees and disabled the forums. How did he manage to do that? I am not so certain, but I think had something to do with too many e-mails bouncing back from his e-mail account. Xandax our resident techie will have more information on that and I will add it here.

Mrs. Sleep Mr. Sleep was a member who doesn’t post anymore a teenager at that time and an old school veteran. Anyway one day he woke up and found out he was married to someone Gamebanshee. That was of course Mrs. Sleep. Lets just say it was an awkward period for him and everybody else as Mrs. Sleep it turned out was a guy…

Waverly vs. Weasel Well that says it all. Weasel and Waverly are by far the two largest mythical figures on SYM. And as all myths go, they vied for the love of the same woman. Minerva in this case. There was a spam/smilie battle for the love of Minerva. Weasel lost due to broken links that would not show up on SYM.

Strange things with Ubik, Umar and Weasel Well a PHB I think was started by Magus, where these three were playing characters. Someone somewhere along the story, decided it was time for some excentric and vile things that needed to be done. Kinky would be weak in describing what happened.

SYM Timewarp A lot of fun. A lot of spam. A lot of weird songs. Heck there is even a timewarp song I believe.

Now this is known as the First Age of SYM. This lasted roughly from in the inception of Gamebanshee to Sept 11th 2001. After that it could be referred to the Second Age of SYM. That is when we had a lot of more people posting a lot of newbies and a lot of spam. During this period a lot of people left or were banned. Right now we are at the Third Age. I use the loss of Gruntboy and the split with DCI as the beginning of the Third Age. I will describe the second age in more detail when I am bored again tomorrow at the UNCTAD meeting. This is an example of how boring UN meetings can be. Thank Allah for a trusty Laptop.

Edit: Everything stated is stated in jest. I didnt want to post smilies in word.

So tell me, is this guide still to be completed? Or did you just get lazy and decide that's all the work you were willing to put into it?

Thanks CM. Nice history we have here. After reading the Banned Bassie thread...I'm wondering, since everyone seemed to idolize him, what did he do that was so bad?

And are there still any links to any of his posts when he was Bassie?

This information has been purged by Official order of the joint commitee of Spam, COMM, SLURR, and DF. No such information can be found at this time. Active searching for said information shall result in one or all of the following:

1) Given to Weasel as a gift for his amusement
2) Subject to the whims of Ubik and Omar, which at present time, their whereabouts are classified information
3) Forced to hug Fas
4) Imbibe the Purple Pill surplus

It is not really that he is idolized. As "simply" baassie he was just very .... obnoxious (would likely be a good word) in many of his latter posts, and flamed people etc. All in all nothing really noteworthy.

What did make him fun was because he came back as banned_baassie and wanted to explain himself. If he hadn't ... nobody would have remembered him at all for a longer periode of time.

Have to finish off the UNCTAD meeting today. So I will finish off the second part today. The second part is pretty long as we had alot of notable spam and alot of problems as well. So it will be done in installments.

Gone wrong in the first post? You bet ya. What the heck am i a hug magnet?

Scayde the flophouse was after sept 11th. Plus there are so many spam threads i can not cover all them of. So a little bribe will ensure the flophouse stays in our histories

I will accept this truce. I do this to quell any such rumors, however, I realize I am likely to get a knife in my back at some point.

Besides, it's late, and I'm tired
