Cynicism and politics aside *grin* I thought, given current events, that it might be fun to discuss space exploration.
Assuming that technology became highly advanced (and that we all discover the fountain of youth within the next couple of years ), would you leap aboard a space ship to join a 'Star Trek' like mission that would jet you off around the universe? Why or why not?

absolutely! i'd take off...hell, even the depths of space has to be brighter and warmer than pittsburgh!
but no, i would not be interested in going off into space for the rest of my life, unless it was soem sort of flying biodome, so i could still enjoy nature. i enjoy the little things abotu this planet too much to go away for too long.

I would proberly be inclined to "go explore space".
I find the universe to be a luring place and notion and think it could be fun to see what is out there. Our world is so terrible small when you think of the current size of the universe.
I'd jump on that chance in a heartbeat | | |

I'd sign the contract with the devil for it.
It is one of my inner dreams - and my hope of human survival (long term survival, of course).
But I doubt we will do that before the sky bridge, wich will lower the costs of space building.

Hello Everyone.
First post in this part of the forum; here goes.
I'd stay at home; I like being able to go outside and breathe.
Being a hamster, I am well used to rattling around inside a plastic box for large portions of my life span and I can tell you, it is not all it's cracked up to be.
IIRC, the Hitch Hiker's Guide had something about how massively dull space is in reality: lots and lots of not very much.
Of course, if we had some sort of super-duper transportation thing so that you could be back in time for lunch, that would be a different matter...

I'm sure you'se are a Giant Space Hamster!!! How could you say that??? (I've spent all Baldur's Gate praying for you to become giant and kick enemies rear along with Minsc )
Now... Yes, being in space is boring. Thats why I'd take a few games with me... Gamers will be the first generation of humas to cross the most distant barriers!!! They will resist the space silence better, they will mantain their mind healthy, they will keep smart... But that is just what I think bout the matter.

What was Appolo program? What is this rush to see who lands on mars first, or this new inertia to place people on the moon land again? Have you noticed China is also preparing for that? Have you noticed Bush wants to hide a war outcome with it?

No way - you mean to tell me a politician is making politically motivated statements? What next..
Lets refocus on the space exploration question. Personally I feel that exploring space is a noble challenge that mankind needs to, and will continue, to undertake.
I would like to hear from some folks who think differently just to get the discussion rolling so to speak.

I don't know, guys--for a space hamster, he sure bears a more than passing resemblance to William Shatner. Notice the slack features, the pot belly, the spastic acting--and I think that's a maple leaf behind his twitching left ear.

It appears that Fable has raised the awful specter of a Canadian space exploration program, with old television actors as their primary astronauts! As an American, I say we cannot let this happen! The space race has begun anew, and we Yankees will never let the Canuks beat us! To Infinity and Beyond!
Actually, I followed the Apollo program very closely when I was a kid, and have been saddened by how the NASA programs have really slowed down, lost focus, and lost the interest of the general populace. I really thought that moon colonies and giant space stations were in store for our immediate future (as did many science fiction writers). Now, I'm not so sure. It was my childhood dream to become an astronaut, and if given the chance, and a little alien technology, I would love to explore the stars. I'd even let William Shatner tag along, if necessary.

| | I have to say I chortled at the recent announcement. Mars mission and stations on the moon. I say we let Dubya go right ahead. Let's have him go first (maybe take Shatner along too) and I think we solve many of todays problems....

Personally, I don't recall losing anything in space, so I see no need to go myself
