As 'Die Another Day', already James Bond movie no. 20, got released a few years ago, I began to wonder if the series shouldn't be put to an end. I saw that movie recently, and during the first half hour, it seemed to be quite promissing: the movie started off surprisingly realistic (Bond being a prisoner, enjoying nine months of cruel torture), with a more originial angel than, well, almost all Bond movies.
After that, the fun was supposed to start, but rather the opposite occured; the action scenes just keeped on rolling, with barely times in between to breath - in the negative way; the scenes were extremely over the top, and the more crazy situations Bond gets into, the more unbelievable it gets that he survives everything by just mere luck. The characters were flat, being not even stereotypical Bond baddies like in the old movies, but just annoying, especially since the director tried (and failed) to put noble reason behind their evil world-dominating-like plans. And if Bond wasn't blasting his way through the movie, he would only spawn annoying cynical one-liners. In the old movies, these were often quite funny, but mostly because you only had a few of them, while here they were way too much.
Now I think it would be wrong to pull the plug on the series, just because of one mediocre movie. But the thing is that also the ones before 'Die Another Day' dissapointed me: 'The World is Not Enough' was even worse than DAD, I can remember 'Tomorrow Will Die' also as not very great, the Timothy Dalton movies soon got boring, and even the Roger Moores soon turned standard - though the latter ones definitely had their charmes, they just weren't the thing compared to the Sean Connery ones.
It's of course impossible to create movies like the very first ones, and it would be a desperate thing to do. I just don't think the new Bond movies succeed in creating a style that is at least 'good'. 'Goldeneye' showed at least some potential, but the rest didn't. Quentin Tarentino was offered to direct the next Bond movie, which would perhaps finally gotten the series out of their valley. But since Pierce Brosnan decided to end being Bond (which is a shame, since he really was the best after Sean Connery), Tarentino dropped out. And if they continue making movies in the line that they are following now, I'd say break the tradition, spend the money on something better. Even though the sponsors won't like it.
Well, that's my thought on the matter, but please don't hesitate to post your opinion, definitely when you feel different about it. And while I already have your attention, I'd like to ask you also what is your favourite James Bond performer (Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton or Pierce Brosnan) and what's your favourite Bond movie.
