Serious crime?

I heard today that a woman called Maya Evans is the first person to be convicted under particular provisions of the Serious and Organised Crime Act in the UK. She stood outside parliament and read out the names of the British soldiers who have died in Iraq. This is against the law in this country now, since it is characterised as an unauthorised protest within one mile of Westminster. She was given a conditional discharge but I am truly shocked at how far the erosion of free speech has now gone

I'm interested to know Fiona, is there much outcry in the UK, or is everyone just accepting it?

Strange that sounds more like an act for mafia-like syndicates and individuals instead of political opponents.

Would that charge even hold up in court?

@ DJ. It has been widely reported, and opinion polls suggest that people do not think it is just, but there is no feeling of outrage that I can see as yet. It may be that the light sentence has defused it

@ Tamerlane. As I said, this woman has been convicted and sentenced.

Wow, what next. Taking political commentators or protest organisers to court?

Without wishing to sound paranoid I am really concerned about the attacks on civil loberties in this country. And about the lack of opposition to them

Is anyone else ironically amused that the parent has been the eager little puppy here?

Does Westminster now have a "Ministry of Truth" too?

That is... appalling.....

*grunts* I've already been in two drunken disagreements tonight, however, I have to stress, this does not surprise me. We are entering an age where the super-powers have realized they can take what they want by misinforming the people which support their militaries and as such, imperial conquest has begun again. Dissenters are silenced and punished, and the masses have been told that everything is done in their best interest. That the sacrifices made by the few, benefit the many. When in fact, the sacrifices of the many, benefit the few.

Britain is the lapdog of the US, waiting to snatch up the scraps we toss them in the event things go as planned by the government, no more, no less.

Hmmm, well I'm really not sure then, as we have never had something like this over here in Australia. We have people protesting against all kinds of things and nothing happens.

I especially loved one of the anti war slogans 'Make love not war' followed by the guy's phone number.

Ah, I remember the good old days of the Cold War when it was only the Sovjets that did all that. I'm just grateful that I live in a country where the government is too inept to effectively deceive anybody.

Heh, the US ran out of reasons to use the Russians as the root of all evil in the world. They moved the bullseye south-west the last two decades.

It is a strange thing to be convicted under the Serious and Organised Crime Act for... I agree that it's worrying how protestors are being lumped in with terrorists.

However, I am cheered by the fact that the High Court has upheld the case of that guy who has been camped out in Parliament Square protesting against the war for four years, and said that he can't be evicted because his protest pre-dates the law.

Yes, it's quite ironic since I think that's why they passed the law in the first place
