| | | Search Bars.../rant *spamalot* I recently installed a new OS on my computer. i reinstalled all my nifty little programs that let me comunicate with my freinds, read documents, play video games, and various other components.
i got to thinking of how many times i had to uncheck or uninstall a yahoo or google search bar. Right now...the kill count is 6. there will be more i'm sure for i am not done loading everything yet.
Am i the only one that gets annoyed with the amount of extra....stuff...that companies try to slide into their wares?
*stalks away muttering about sporks*

| | I never install those kinds of things: spyware, all of it. If I want Google, I type "g {search item}" in my web address line, and get it on the item I want. The answer: if you get annoyed at them, don't use 'em.

| | | I actually use the Yahoo! search bar but I do agree everyone wants to add one. My wife recently "updated" our Shareaza program when I wasn't looking (I had been turning down the update for months) and naturally it came with its own searchbar. No biggy I just uninstall the searchbar and leave the rest go right? Nope...Shareaza will no longer open since the searchbar is gone.

I've been using Opera and Pocomail for several years.

And yes, if removed even slightly wrong way, IE won't work anymore. I know this as I had such problem when updating my mothers computer (she doesn't want to use any other browser than IE and without any such toolbars)
Bless the Opera that it doesn't contain any such annoying feature nor is there any plannings to do so (or as far as I know)

| | | Not really a search bar, but I do wonder what is my printer's brand doing on my search bar. As if to remind me how it only works with a nice 50% chance. Which is about the same chance of my IE works.
I got to love my firefox. |

| | Just got AVG, a security package, to review. Wouldn't you know that its Security Bar (which checks websites and the like within IE) features the Yahoo! search engine? They go further: while installing AVG, 1 of the 7 steps you go through in the initial configuration wizard is answering their question whether you want Yahoo! search made your default search. When I asked the PR rep what the reason was for this configuration step, he heard back from the CEO that security bars were the wave of the future, nobody could stand in the way of progress, etc--in short, nothing about why they slipped in a little push for Yahoo! search.
But lo! do I smell the sound of money changing hands?

A lot of third party software would like to install google or yahoo bars though - but never anything I've received directly from Microsoft. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Rate This Thread | Linear Mode | |
