Come on fess up, who likes Romantic Comedys.

In my cynical youth I considerd romantic comedys to be little above musicals in the filmic echelons, now however they have raised in my estimations.

I know it's sad really, i should hate and shun them since they rely on twee dialogue and frankly crappy set pieces. However there is something in them that can occasionally bring a smile to my face and I sometimes feel better after watching them.

Does this make me less of a human being or am I merely lost in my own hopeless intellect.

This was prompted by a particularly ridiculous rom com by the name of "The Truth About Cats and Dogs" featuring Uma Thurman, it's so silly and yet it makes me laugh and feel better...i think i need to go listen to a Slipknot album

I guess it depends by what you mean when you write, "romantic comedy." Most of us wouldn't like to admit to a fondness for 'em, because the phrase reminds of the dullest, dead-brained stuff our parents watched--no matter what the generation. My wife, for instance, still indulges in the occasional sinful pleasure of watching horrid Cary Grant/Doris Day films whose mere existence in the world causes me to reflexively grab for my Kalazhnikov. On the other hand, I enjoy a good production of Shakespeare's Much Ado Abou Nothing--and what's that, except a high grade romantic comedy? The phrase that defines it, damns it. We don't want to be seen drinking out of milk cartons, even when they contain Veuve Cliquot.

It's also a matter of spirit. "Sleepless in Seattle" was inane, IMO, with a few inspired moments of comedy--just my POV. On the other hand, Ernst Lubitsch's "Trouble in Paradise," made in 1932, just may be the most sophisticated, witty film ever made, in which the romance and comedy derives from a pair of jewel thieves meeting, falling in love, and ripping off the unsuspecting wealthy, whose sexual attractions they survive. The two movies are almost polar opposites: sentimentality vs cleverness, yet both are by definition romantic comedies. (If you want to read more about Trouble in Paradise, check here.)

Maybe i should be ashamed, and I would never admit this to my RL 'Tough Guy' friends, but nothing cheers me up when i'm feeling down like a good romantic comedy . Most of my favorites are the ones by or based loosely on Shakespeare .

Romances are the pits. The only movies that I ever watch that involve romance are comedies. And when I say comedies, Im implying parodies. And obviously there are romances in the action films I watch, but I certainly dont watch the action movies for the romance involved.

As far as books go, the only books I really like are historical books or historical stories, that usually dont represent romance in any way. The only book, that I can remember, that Ive liked that isnt a historical story is "The Fall" by Albert Camus. That was a great book.

@Sleep: Gadzooks! Snap out of it, man! Don't you know that fondness for Romantic Comedies is a sure sign that your mind is becoming.....................normal?

I generally find the majority of Romantic Comedies to be rather boring, but there was one several years ago I found interesting - if memory serves, it was called When Harry Met Sally. It was actually rather good, I admit - but you won't catch me admitting this often, as I generally avoid involving myself in such stories. The cliche meter usually maxes out after 10 minutes.

Most of the american ones are pretty crap, I think.
Denmark, and sometimes sweden too, comes up with some pretty decent ones. The swedish "Jalla Jalla" is one of my favorite movies...

I seem to recall seeing that once, it wasn't all bad as I recall.
But then I also liked The Joy Luck Club...

Some romantic comedies I've enjoyed; that's right, I'm not so insecure in my masculinity that I can't admit to enjoying these movies:

I think When Harry Met Sally is one of the ten funniest movies ever made.

Bull Durham is a chick movie disguised as a baseball movie.

Although it's not a traditional romantic comedy, American Pie is very, very funny.

10 Things I Hate About You isn't bad either.

If you need a guaranteed score, rent Say Anything with your girlfriend.

My bonus pick is a movie I haven't seen but everyone I've talked to (and whose judgement in movies I trust) says is really, really good, and that's My Big, Fat, Greek Wedding.

See? They're not all bad.

Swedish movies huh?
When I think of Swedish movies, titels like "Heidi has fun with local boys" come to mind!
Or is that just a stereotype?

@HLD
When Harry Met Sally is ok indeed. And everybody knows that one scene, if you know what I mean. (when they are eating and she sais all girls fake it one time or another Hilarious!)
But I don't think American Pie is a romantic comedy, just a comedy IMO. But it was funny anyway.

Other that that.
Most romantic comedy's suck.
(I love you! I love you too! The end. )

The ultimate Swedish romantic comedy: Bergman's Smiles on a Summer Night.

Do yourselves some good. Rent a copy of Ninotchka. You won't be disappointed.

"Not bad" - ? It's great! I think this one is just a hoot!

But this from a 700+ year-old monk, who has "Mary Poppins" in his DVD collection, right along-side "das Boot." Go figure.

Peace.

Indeed, a 700+ year-old monk who obviously has discerning taste. Good things come in all shapes and sizes, and unless something is truly uninspired, one can find interesting things if one merely looks. One day, I decided to actually sit down and watch "Mary Poppins" with my friends and their kids. I liked it. (Van Dyke particularly shined as Bert, the show-stealer IMO)

Thinking about that movie (and those cheesy parts) reels me in back on topic , and brings to mind what I feel is the absolute worst ongoing romantic comedy that ever disgraced the airwaves in this universe:

The Ultimate Cheese Award

...Has to go to the Love Boat, possibly the most wretched TV show ever to air on television in the United States (Fantasy Island ranks second).

HLD has presented quite an impressive list. My Big, Fat, Greek Wedding sounds like something I would like to see.

A lot of romantic comedies suck.. though not as much as romances that take themselves seriously (especially ones starring Keanu Reeves )... but there are some decent ones. I personally quite enjoyed Bridget Jones' Diary, High Fidelity and About A Boy (though whether the latter is a romcom is debatable). And 10 Things... was great!
