Sadly, the Lions from Senegal did not qualify to the World Cup this time I really think it is unfair that Africa has only 5 qualifying places. Senegal came second in their qualifying group, pipped by Togo with 2 points, and only the group winner qualifies.
I would also very much like to see an African team go far in the tournament, since it would be good for the financial development of African football. It is said that fine teams like Cameroon one year reach the last 8, and another year even fail to qualify due to such a lousy financial situation so the clubs can't even afford shoes to the players.

We have 2 recent titles, and we're seen as the mighty giant to be beaten. Now, seeing other nation winning will raise worldwide interest in the sport, and things will be cooler for the next years.
I cant really say I'd like Argentina to win, though

@Luis: I see, that I can agree with. It's imo never bad for the football when Brazil win, but it is nice with change sometimes.

I got my money on Argentina, as I too would like to see them finally get a championship .
P.S. Yes I'm from the US, and yes I pay attention to international soccer (I'm a british premiership freak).

Oh no, I wouldnt like to see Argentina champion. Hehe those guys would be impossible afterwards. I mean, Carlos Tevez was elected the best player in Brazilian championship (he's from Argentina) and their press is making a fuss about it.
Oh regarding Australia (I forgot telling this before) I'd like to see them going further, but I guess they wont pass through Japan and Croatia (sp?), who are also going quite well. Anyway, if Australia qualifies to the next round I'd be happy, cause the games will have a large ammount of suspense.

Swedish journalists make a big fuss even when Swedish players makes assists in club football abroad. It's horribly pathetic, but hopefully a phenomenon limited to sports journalists.
@TonyMontana: As I have understood it football have become increasingly popular in the US over the last few years. Do you think this is true, and if so, why?

| | How about placing some bets on the underdog that gets the furthest?
The underdogs according to the Coca Cola/Fifa chart are:
Angola, Australia, Costa Rica, Côte d'Ivoire, Ecuador, Ghana, Korea Republic, Paraguay, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Serbia & Montenegro, Switzerland, Togo, Trinidad & Tobago, Tunisia, Ukraine (@Dottie: It's called soccer in the US, ofcourse. ) | | |

In a more realistic tone, I think they will qualify from the group stage, behind Brazil of course.
Aside from them, I'd like to see Costa Rica advance as well.

Maybe...In any case, I hope it will go well for the Netherlands, I have missed them!
I am hoping for a final between Argentina and Brazil, with Brazil as winners although I don't personally mind Argentina as winners either. I felt so sad for Argentina in 2002 when they were in the middle of the economical crisis, the World bank refused to ease the burden of their loans, and on top of it, they went out from the World Cup already in the group stage. One of the owners of the tango club where I was a member spent the summer 2002 in Buenos Aires, and he said people where crying on the streets when Argentina went out. The general atmosphere was like "now we have lost our only light in the darkness"
Besides, Argentina has a very fine team (better than in 2002 I think, and less diving and opera-stage rolling around I hope) and play beautiful football, although not as beautiful as Brazil in their best moments.
Why on earth do you like Brazil to loose their match against Japan? Make up for the Confederation Cup game when Japan played so well? Quote: |

Go Argentina... go Brazil... and you'd better do better this year, Australia!
(Hmmm... and maybe for some interest I'll cheer on SK too... )

I don't know if it's a really signficant increase (it's hard to speak for a whole country, but I watch ESPN the sports channel alot ), but some attention is being paid to it thanks to the increased media coverage of the
Cup every year. MLS soccer is still an absolute joke, but at least Freddy Adu (regardless of what you think about him) has brought some interest too. I'd say it is on the upswing, but it isn't as mainstream as it ought to be: until the rest of the world starts calling it 'soccer' too (lord knows that aint happening), too many people will continue to confuse the sport with American football .
