More proof that high voltage is not the answer...

NICOSIA (Reuters) - A raccoon suffered an 11,000 volt electric shock when it scampered up a pylon in Cyprus but escaped with burns.

The nocturnal mammal triggered a two-hour power outage at the town of Aradippou in southeast Cyprus after it scaled the pylon. It was eventually captured with a net and has been impounded by vets as an illegal import.

"It suffered some burns which we treated and is now recovering ... it certainly has the will to live," Charalambos Kakoyiannis of the island's veterinary department said on Thursday.

Raccoons, a native of the Americas, were introduced to Europe last century but are alien to Cyprus and authorities said the animal, whose owner was unknown, was smuggled onto the island.

This is amazing. I cant recall something like that, but I know of someone who has been shocked by a cathode tube from a TV and actually survived (aprox 10000 volts if I'm not mistaken). but such a thing should have turned the poor thing into barbeque.

Its not the voltage that kills you... it's the current. My bet is the racoon wasn't properly grounded - the electrical profession is obviously going downhill.

The voltage in a tv or monitor is at least 10 kV, but is generally much higher. The new flat (as in not so deep) cathode ray tubes need a lot more voltage since the distance between the electron gun and the screen is much shorter thereby requiring that the electrons do a sharper turn inside the tube. I tried putting my finger on one of those coils once... not something I'll do again if I can help it, but its far more painful than lethal. Very similar to the ignition system of an engine, something most kids with mopeds/motorbikes have been jolted by.

You can survive high current as well, as long as it doesn't pass through anything vital, like the heart or brain (for some ).

It was probably exposed to a high voltage for only a short time...

Or more likely wasn't grounded, so the resistance was high, making the current low... Thus racoon mildly crispy rather than deep fried...

MMMMM Deep fried Racoon. I haven't really learnt enough about electricity to know it survived. I'd say it was out of the frying pan into the fire though. Its been put in a pound.

Glad my electric companies don't focus on grounding racoons.

That was the most amusing title I've ever seen.

Hm...if not electricity then what? Fire? Gas? Brutal mutilation?

...the first thing that came to my mind was the concern that the presence of a non-native animal would have a significant effect on the ecological balance of its new home.

I think residents of a Hawaiian island complaining about the incessant and annoying noises of some alien frogs could relate to this.
