I didn't want to bog down our LotR thread with this little question. In reviewing notes on the movie and the cast of characters, I see Liv Tyler playing a character named Arwen. I've read the trilogy several times and I don't really recall her character. Can anyone shed some light here. What am I missing???

Also, are these movies supposed to follow the books or are all three movies going to mish mash the books together to flow as they see fit.

Does Tom Bombadil get overlooked just like in the cartoon LotR?

I'll stop here; this is turning into 20 questions. That's no gouda.

Well I guess I'm not very helpful, but I really have no idea. I don't seem to follow the creation of the movie that close...

Hey Ned, what's up?

I'm not that up on the LOTR news but here's my take:

1. I don't remember any "Arwen" either

2. I heard they're going to follow the beginnings and endings of the books which means that movies 1 and 2 will end with cliffhangers.

3. I heard Tom Bombadil was out.

Vicsun,

until I wrote this, we had the same number of posts. Very strange although with as many as 30-50 new members joining every day, it will become more common.

We're 4000+ strong now, fear the banshee cult.

Um...Arwen Evenstar? (I'm relying on memory, here, which means I'm essentially running on empty.) I think there was an Arwen who was the mother of Arathorn's bride, but I could be wrong.

goodness peeps....Arwen Evenstar, she is the most beautiful creature in all of middle earth...only her mother, Galadriel, can compare in beauty. She is the daughter of Elrond, ruler of the last homely house.
Arwen and Aragorn have pledged their love to one another.

Arwen played a small part in the actual story. I hope they don't make her part all dramatic since Liv Tyler is playing it, but i won't be surprised.

Um how many rings does this Lord wear anyhow??
Does the Lord have as many rings as Saturn?
Are the rings Diamonds, Emeralds, and Rubies? How a Pearl ring or Black Opal ring?
Does the Lord have ring around the collar?
Does the Lord have rings in his ears, nose, eyebrow, belly button and toes?

Enquiring minds needs to know. Like:

What is the Lord of the Rings age, weight, height?
Does the Lord of the Rings have all of his appendages?
Is the Lord of the Rings, straight or gay?

See these are important question, for all to find out. Will we find this all out from the movie??? Because, I certainly didn't read it in any of the books. Questions to be answered.

Actually, I don't think Galadriel is Arwen's mother ... Galadriel is the wife of Celeborn, and they reside in Lothlorien. But Arwen is daughter to Elrond. I can't recall who her mother (and Elrond's wife) is ... I think she is dead, in any event.

Yes, Arwen is Aragorn's betrothed.

She plays almost NO role in the book, but her part in the movie has been expanded. I guess I won't mind seeing a bit more of Liv Tyler. Rroowrrr!

No, no, no - I don't mean Arwen will die; I mean Arwen's mother is already dead when the story takes place. Sorry if that wasn't clear. Arwen most certainly will not die in the film - that would be way too much of a change from the book.

I believe that Galadriel is Arwen's grandmother. Arwen's mother's mother

Arwen is only briefly in the first book, making an appearance in Rivendell, at the big banquet. She is also in "The Return of the King," but again only briefly. As has already been explained, she is Aragorn's betrothed.

In the movie they are giving her a beefier role, in order to bring in more strong female characters and to elaborate on the romance.

Tolkein did write a bit more on Arwen and Aragorn; you can find it in the Appendices in "The Return of the King," if you have an edition with the big appendix at the back.

@Aleldar: ROFL!!

I believe Frodo came across Arwen while staying at Rivendill. She was crying, can't remember why.
