This is for my debate team as well as my own interest

Some questions are just questions about facts and other questions are oppinion questions. I have my oppinions about the oppinion questions; but I am interested in seeing your oppinion in case I may encounter a similar argument in the future.

How much does it cost the federal & state governments to lock somebody up per person?

How much does it cost to put someone in mental therapy? (not privatized places; federal or state run places)

Should those who are considered mentally ill be exempt from the criminal justice system?

What types of commercial products can the state government tax?

Do you believe that more restrictions should be placed on privatized companies in mental health and that more federal government intverntion is for the better? I'm particularly interested in the You're-a-peein's (European's) thoughts on this question.

How much does it cost the federal & state governments to lock somebody up per person?

This question is unclear. By ‘locking up’ do you mean sending someone to jail or to an institution? Please note that if you mean, “How much does it cost to place a mentally ill person in an institution?”, then the way you have asked the question above already biases the answer. Mentally ill people who are institutionalized are not “locked up” in the same way that a convicted felon is “locked up.” Since the 60s and the movement toward deinstitutionalization in mental health, institutionalizing someone today takes a lot of documentation and effort. Generally, this option is reserved for the criminally insane, people without families who cannot be managed in a less restrictive setting, people who are both mentally ill and have a serious systemic illness, or people who are consistently aggressive and combative.

How much does it cost to put someone in mental therapy? (not privatized places; federal or state run places)

Again, the question is unclear. People are not typically ‘put’ into “mental therapy.” They generally choose to do a course of therapy or not of their own free will. If you are talking about court-ordered interventions, or things of that nature, then it would be helpful to clarify that as your intention.

Should those who are considered mentally ill be exempt from the criminal justice system?

Please define what you mean by “mentally ill.”

hmm... If I understand correctly what prateek asked, I think that he meant:

1. How much does it cost to put someone into prison (I think that that's what he meant by lock up...)

2. How much does it cost to place a mentally ill person in an institution?

3. I think that he means the people who have commited a crime and are found guilty but are not put into jail on the grounds that they are mentally ill.

I don't know the answers to any of the above, I'm just trying to help COMMunication

I believe thantor3 might be giving you a hint at how a debate can be turned against your team with unclarified questions.

The first rule to use in a debate, take your side of the question/problem being debated and try to figure out how the other side will come at you. "Know your enemy"

Or I could be just on cloud nine...if so just ignore this post.

When he asked how mentally ill was defined, I was a bit surpised at the very "debatish" answer. Oddly enough, I'm usually the ones who tend to ask such questions

Rarely do people ask such questions outside of a debate meet. I could give several definitions as to what mentally ill really is (excessive drug abuse, schizophrenia, have an IQ lower than 200.....)

However, there is such conflict and argumetns as to what a real definiton of mentally ill is. It's difficult for me to give one.

When i'm IN a debate, I usually give a definition that best suits and supports my argument.
