I noticed in another thread that GawainBS is naming his new rig...congrats on the new machine GawainBS.....
That brought up the question...
Do you name your computer?
I thought I was one of the only ones to name machines.
I personally have named various autos I've owned and musical instruments..
and of course the various computers I've owned...
Some have been named for their purpose...the Vault for example is a machine I used for storing lots of the old blues and jazz music I've collected
and I named all the machines on a friend's home network for the characters from Winnie the Pooh...
.his kids loved it..
While others have been given both gender names....some just seem to name themselves...

Perhaps you could ask what each person's computer is "named" as there is such a feature?
I remember that at my last internship, all of the printers were named after the seven dwarves.

I do. I've had Prophet (after the ol' Hercules Radeon 9800xt), Hyperion (after the books) and Epicure (after someone who had way too much time on his hands in an age where there weren't enough video games around to prevent the seeding of abstract thought).
My current Ubuntu rig is called Malkav, but not because I happen to like tossing dice over the corpses of ancient vampires or anything. I mean, the distribution is already called Ubuntu. It's hard to get any more original than that. I had to fill in a name at an unexpected moment during installation and I went with the first thing that popped into my head. Not much of a diversion there I suppose.
I may yet change it.

No, I don't. However, if I do want to give it a name, I might choose 'Jerry's Medicine' for laughs.

No. I don't get attached to them, I often hate them, and they're gone in about six to twelve months nowadays. The floozies!

I don't think he means affectionate naming. If that was the case I would have come up with something sluttier. More like the computer name you need on a network.

My current machine is 6 years old, so we got quite intimate. | | |

I had my previous rig for a long time (about 6 years) and it's still sitting beside the new machine. I'm not sure if it's nostalgia or if it's because I still haven't gotten around to transferring a bunch of files..
I mean... that computer knows all of my secrets.. it would be kind of like ending a friendship... *sob*
But I've never actually named my computers, though..

I do intent to keep this PC (pats it on the case) afterwards. Going to set up a small network so we no longer have to share a PC.

Hm. I remember having a really hard time parting with my first computer. I kept it around for years, thinking it would come in handy at some point as a server or some such. It never did of course.
I put a lot of love in building my current computer, so maybe I'll do something different with this one. I think of it no differently than a painter might over one of his works. There is definitely some sense of attachment here. And I don't believe there is anything wrong with paying your respects to a bonding that has served you well in the past either, living or no. Honestly, we do strangers things.

I call mine 36 Hour Viagra.
Reason being, without fail, every 35 to 37 hours it slows down almost to a screeching halt until I reboot it. Plus, it's a compaq, so like an old man's junk on Viagra, it's a horrible horrible thing that just won't die.

Piece of junk doesn't qualify as a name, does it?

Hm. Responses aren't what I expected at all. Not writing down a specific computer name is one thing, but I guess I'm even more of a sentimental old fool than I thought I was.
