I played back about a decade ago, but gave up. The program commands were very limited, the add-ons by admins were non-standard, and many of the people were only interested in talking about software.
I did join the staff at DragonRealms, though, for about four years. That's sort of an uber-MUD, with a very complex programming system that allowed for more effects than any regular MUD, MUSH, MUCK, etc, I've otherwise observed. It was fun, but got increasingly hectic as the owners forgot most of us were doing it for sheer pleasure in our spare time. They began whipping us to double and triple speed, hoping to ekk out a few more years and members before the visual MMORPGs took away their gravy train.
