You can read about it here.
Let's keep this to considerations of his books, or the films made from them, okay? Weeping and wailing over him is something Vonnegut would loathe--understandably so. There's no better way to praise a writer than to coo over what he's written.

So it goes.
I'm not a diehard Vonnegut reader, but he is easily one of the best writers I've ever read. Breakfast of Champions is my personal favorite.

SOMEBODY
Sometime-Sometime He tried
I was actually rather upset when I read the news. I hope Vonnegut is now in human secularist heaven.

To make this perfectly clear so it doesn't go down as spam: I've been a fan for almost 30 years, and I hope he spends eternity as a donkey building pyramids! Preferrably locked on an anal spaceprobe somewhere in limbo with Douglas Adams. I met him twice, and you could never dig up a stranger and more entertaining man. Godspeed, smoergasboy!

You can't just casually mention you've met him and not give any details; I want to hear some stories!

Just finished putting up display of his works, did my heart good to see that most of his books were actually out on loan before this.
Will be missed.

Hmm, that's sad. I had recently just read Harrison Bergeron too, and that's the only thing I've read of him. I'll have to look for other books I suppose.

Nothing much to reveal, actually... I've done a couple of things wrong in my life, but being an eternal fanboy and participating in and arranging conventions was never one of them. Hell, here I am on SYM! Suffice to say, KV was the only author who showed up at a convention with a bodyguard. That was a first. 5000 drunk nerds, and he won the cup for "weirdest person." That's competing against fat girls dressed like Boba Fett and Michael Moorcock walking through a plate glass window. KV was nice, but the semi-religious stuff he put out made him something of a party joke amongst the fanbrigade up here on the reef...

Semi-religious stuff? Do you mean, at the conference, itself? How?
The only bigwig I ever talked to (and repeatedly, because he was amusing, even though I didn't like him) was Asimov. The guy could easily be found, clutching two technically underage girl groupies as he walked along, trading jokes loudly. He also had an excellent memory. Wish I had one like it.

I would love to have met Asimov. As for KV, he actually created a religion, and some veeery strange people got upset with him when he renounced them. The thing is, you always dream about meeting these people, and when you do, they either disappoint you or make you feel like a chump. Maybe that's what fandom is all about?

He? They? Whatever. There is people out there who worship HP Lovecraft and think his "Necronomicon" is real. Oh, and don't get me started on Hubbard. KV on acid put out a pile of very peculiar theories, and some of them became the gospel.

Moonbiter, I need to know the kind of conventions you go to where they offer acid and have Vonnegut as a guest.
Also, here's a picture of something indecent for everyone to marvel at: * | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | | | Display Modes | Rate This Thread | Linear Mode | |
