| | Impulsive biter...? My friend mentioned this a couple days ago, and it got me curious. Mostly, because, I think I am one!
I've discovered I always need to be chewing on something -- fingernails, gum, paper (yes, paper ), hair, pencils/pens, etc. And a while ago I discovered something very weird.
Due to my recent cold, I've gotten these throat lozenges, and the directions say to "let dissolve slowly in mouth," but by the time I read these, the lozenge is crushed up in my mouth.
So I pop another one, I tell myself, Okay, dissolve slowly in mouth.
I start doing something else, my mind starts wandering, and when I'm brought back to earth the lozenge is all broken up again! I've chewed it up.
I try it once more, I get off doing something else, I realize it's crumbled in my teeth again.
Comments? Are any of you "impulsive biters?" |

| | *nods* I'm definately a biter. I have a tendency to clench my jaw when frustrated, and in my sleep too. Which, isn't good, and is part of the reason for my jaw problems.
Basically, anytime I'm bored, frustrated, or excited, I have the urge to bite something or someone.

| | | Hmmm, lets see, I chew through a pack of Dentyne Ice (chewing gum) a day and have been known to go through two, I have chewed holes through several of my favorite pens, and chew up all mints, cough drops, and other orally inserted edibles... so, yeah. |

| | Heh, my record is 28 pieces of gum in twenty minutes. That's just how weird I am.
At least I know it was two packs and a half. |

| | | I would do that, but I try to ration my gum out so itll last me through classes, some teachers dont allow gum in class, not that I listen, but I also have to spit it out to eat on occasion, not that I do that every time either. |

| | Heh. Problem is, one piece is never enough. They make them way too small, and they run out of flavour within 10 minutes. That "extra flavour" gum, lasts a record breaking 11 minutes. |

| | | i normally start with two pieces, and add ane xtra two at the begining of each class, I dont chew for the flavor, I just need the mechanical motion of chewing. used to hcew it all as one big piece, but now i keep it even with one piece on each side of my mouth, it helps me concentrate, trying to keep them each on one side and not crossing over and combining with the other one. |

| | Never bitten fingernails, never bitten pens, never bitten hair... and anything else mentioned.
I did used to do this thing as a kid where I would move my jaw alot though...
Oh, and I've bitten my fingernails once... when I was really young, and got lost in an elevator... |

| | | I am not a biter, but I do have other "nervous tendencies", which especially comes out when I'm concentrated at work.
Then I sit and flip a pen through my fingers or have miniature ATI american-football I throw to myself, or my leg starts bouncing up and down rapidly..... |

| | I don't have any habits like compulsively biting. In fact, I can't stand chewing gum, no matter the flavour or brand. It feels (and tastes) like plastic to me..
But, I do have the habit, when nervous or tense, of fiddling with my hair. Of course, anyone else plays with my hair, and they're setting themselves up to be slapped
MY SO will compulsively bounce his leg up and down as Xandax describes. That drives me totally nuts, and it will set my own nerves on edge.

| | | I chew gum all the time, but it's more for the "freshness" than for the chewing action. But when I've been consuming caffeine my jaw clenches impulsively, and I'll chew gum to keep from grinding my teeth. I also grind my teeth in my sleep, so I'll sometimes chew a wad of gum to keep my teeth apart in bed. I also tend to clench when I've been drinking, so gum helps then too.
Incidentally, I'm a biter when it comes to more... er... intimate settings. If I'm not paying attention to what I'm doing and I get carried away, I'm known to leave marks.
Ew kinky.

I think I'm kinesthetic. If there is something nearby that I can fiddle with, say a pen or a piece of foam, I'm probably not going to leave it alone for long.
That's kind of compulsive. |
