| | | Here Comes the Rain... *Again* It normally rains a lot on the West Coast during the winter... Indeed.. that is why we have 'rain forests..'
But, this winter has been unusually wet, even for here. I am not kidding.. it has rained every day for about the last month....
Quite often, it has actually been darker at noon than when I first wake up in the morning (around 7 or 7:30)
And, it is driving me crazy. I have mild SAD (seasonal affected disorder), which is why I have such a low tolerance for endless grey skies and rain.
Now, I know there is a special lamp you can get, which is supposed to help. But that is not presently an option. So... I would be very grateful to hear of suggestions from my fellow Symians in countering this bleak weather....

| | Take a longboat with 26 of your best men! Sail to where the sun sets; there, you will find a village. Pillage, plunder, and burn everything you find!
Oh wait...
Honestly, I'd suggest these things:
- Read novels; I got tons of Forgotten Realms books I have yet to read, including R.A. Salvatore's "Promise of the Witch King" that I got for Christmas. I have little doubt you have novels you would like out there, fiction or not.
- Listen to music; Your taste and mine may vary, but maybe you can find some long compilations (or just whole albums you can listen to start to finish) that will take up some time. Then again, one of my favorite songs from the last couple of years (Iced Earth's "Dante's Inferno") is about half a normal album's length at about 15 minutes long.
- Roleplay, maybe with your son if he's interested. Do something with him in the house (if available) to burn away the hours. Nothing like building an (modestly innocent) story out of the air, no?
- Write. Poetry, creative prose, etc. Making D&D stats is my current equivalent to writing, as my stats for Dungeon Crawl Incorporated and Baldur's Gate characters can attest to (note: current stats of these have been outsourced for the time being; I hope to eventually update you all on at least the BG stats).

| | | I enjoy the rain, I play in it. So...I dunno if I could be much help here. However, I know I hate sunny and hot weather. In those cases, I absorb myself in a good book or game, and block out the rest of the world.

| | Don't go into the mountains. From what I hear over here they are pretty cloudy and dreary at the moment, and Calgary itself... we have smattered piles of snow, and everything looks dead. The grass is brown, the trees are brown, the houses are getting dusty, we have no rabbits wandering around...
My last time to BC had good, foggy weather, so I see what you mean.
I know some people have locked themselves into a section of the house when they want to escape the misery, and have some lights hanging outside the windows with the blind closed, but apparently it does not work well.
Can't be much of a help. Just keep yourself busy. Post, read, Roleplay, watch TV, whatever you want.
Oh well, you can always get your SO to smile 24/7 to cheer you up.

| | We've had sever hundred millimeters a day of rain in Bergen - Norway where I'm from, so yeah I know my deal about rain
My advice? DVD marathon, go play one of the "oldies" (no not fable ) BG2, FO2, PS:T or those games.. perfect for staying inside in during rain
Also, invites some friends over, and play some social games (don't have better word) like monopoly, cluedo, fantasy etc.. combine this with some good coffee/tea/hot chocolate and you're set for a great time

| | I love me some rain: something about it raining outside makes being inside so much more cozy. If you've got a fire-place, use it (even if you dont need the heat) and read a book. Most comfortable feeling in the world. |

| | @Patrick,
I would gladly trade if I could. I enjoy desert climates, they're my ideal, in fact.
@Tony,
I agree, rain can be very pleasant... *on occasion*
But, when it rains..day in and day out... practically without cease, for weeks and weeks ... and weeks at a time.. it's enough to drive any sane person mad. And, since I only have a partial grip on my sanity on the best of occasions, this really is not good.
I mean... at this rate, I'm expecting to grow webbing between my fingers and toes any day now..
The only positive thing to this is that the sound is pleasant at night while drifting off to sleep. At least my insomnia isn't presently a problem.. But still...
Even worse is to hear the standard West Coast refrain when you complain about the stuff. That semi-nasal whine monotonously intoning..."Well at least you don't have to shovel it...."
I very nearly strangled somebody who did that the other day... I'll give them something to shovel alright!
I'll take snow and cold, *any* day over this crap. And this ain't a case of the grass being greener, I have extensively lived in the snow belt and liked it...
Imagine standing beneath a cool shower for a month... The bathroom ceiling is low, and all of the walls (ceiling included) are grey... This is what's like.
Um... okay... I'll shut up now..

It is wonderfully soothing. Besides, being outside in the middle of a downpour brings back fond memories of my times with Pattie. Oh, and when it's a bad storm with thunder and lightning, I get the roads to myself to walk around on. It's almost energizing.
You go DW! Whack you some happy-go-lucky idjits.
