Brandy:
1657, abbreviation of brandywine (1622) from Du. brandewijn "burnt wine," so called because it is distilled (cf. Ger. cognate Branntwein and Czech palenka "brandy," from paliti "to burn").
I'm wondering why the English borrowed the word from Dutch.

Er.....because we are language whores?

I didn't realise, but you are clearly right. I got brandy without any problem. And the only thing I can ask for in dutch is a baguette with ham and cheese and a milky coffee.

@ Luis. You are kind to the point of dishonesty, my dear

Juist ja. Stokbrood met ham en kaas. Koffie met melk.
Broodje gezond: you need to add lettuce & tomato to the ham & cheese.
Koffie verkeerd: coffee with a lot of milk (I was confused by your milky coffee, I thought that you ment this).
