I have had this conversation with numerous friends, both male and female, so I thought it might be interesting to bring it to the oft eccentic, oft insightful SYM
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to actually be the opposite gender? We are slowly reaching the stage where women and men are able to achieve many, if not all, of the same things... But what would it it feel like to do, complete, obtain those things as the other gender?
I know people who feel they are in the wrong body (I'm not qualified to comment in this area so this is just a stab in the dark) sometimes do get a sex change, but this is not really what I am talking about.
I have just often wondered what it is like for men to experience simply stretching in the morning, or discussing a promotion with one's boss, walking alone down a dark street at night, or sex.. well especially sex...
All kinds of things...
Don't get me wrong , I'm entirely happy and comfortable being female, but I think if I could have any wish granted it would be to be male for one day, just to feel, smell, taste, see and touch in what I imagine must be a very similar yet slightly different way.

| | | yup, it is an interesting topic.
for a start, it may shed some light on the whole beauty products fixation. and it might be nice to use a toilet that doesn't resemble a barn that has been home to a large number of very nervous farm animals.
I'd also like to have conversations that don't inevitably meander towards the topic of cars.

Lo lo lo, Lola... (Did anyone else get that reference? Or am I reading things that aren't there?)
It might be kinda nice to be accepted as creative and intuitive, rather than have people automatically typecast me as the controlled and logical one in my relationship on account of my sex.

@Fable, you aren't imaging things, I lifted the thread title right out of the song lyrics
I think both you and Robnark have pointed to something critical.. that of typecasting or the inevitable 'gender-specific' discussions.
I often wonder if humans will ever be able to get beyond this... I mean I'll freely admit that I'm highly intuitive and nobody ever calls me on it, in fact they seem to expect it. My partner is also quite intuitive but he will never, ever say that; the closest he'll ever come is to state that he has "strong political instincts" or he "generally knows which way the winds are blowing." And my partner is, by and large, fairly progressive....

dragon wench, if you want to feel what it's like to be on the man's side of a conversation, here's a suggestion. Pretend that you're a natural-born problem-solver and that you can figure out everything for yourself. When someone talks about a problem, try to think of a way to solve it for him or her and insist on not letting him or her leave the conversation until you have finished explaining your ideas. When someone else tries to explain something to you, instead of listening to him or her, you should try to anticipate what the other person is trying to say, and you should pretend that you already know everything that he or she is trying to tell you, or else you can figure it out for yourself while they're trying to talk to you. You don't need to ask for instructions or directions. That should give you some idea of how it feels to be a man.
A lot of people think that I don't think or act like a typical woman. Darn those stereotypes. (cough, cough) But seriously, when I post messages online, most people seem to assume that I'm male. Even Fable made that mistake. I think it just goes to show that people in general have preconceived notions about gender that ignore realities that are right in their face. This includes what you were saying about your boyfriend, who can't come out and say that he's intuitive. I guess it's just the way our brains work.
No offense, but if I could have only one wish granted, it wouldn't be to be a man for a day just to see what it feels like.

I'm the one who always wants to stop and ask directions when we're on the road, for instance. She'll just get this determined look and ignore my suggestion. I've learned when we're walking around, looking for something, to just simply walk up to somebody instead of suggest it to her so we can stop and get our bearings, because she'll start off in another direction and simulate knowledge. That's because your syntax was straightforward and your sentence structure was noun-predicate. (I could suggest your beard had something to do it, but you've probably shaved that off.) Men tend to write like that. Lacking anything else, it was a reasonable decision. By contrast, people in MMORPGs and forums often think I'm female, because of my verbal/written skills, and my way of phrasing.

@DW: I have at times wanted to do the same thing. Not so much because I think it would be different being a woman but rather because I would like to compare other peoples behaviour towards both genders. Ofcourse this can be achived with just cross-dressing, but unfortunatly the makeup skills needed to be convincing are far beyond my ability. The sex part would be interesting as well ofcourse. Just have to remember to ask for temporary sex change on partner as well.

Not me I like being male, I mean I already know what women go through in life. The best part of course is that you can aim right, you don't need to squat; next best you don't have to bear children, I've already imagined what it would feel like to have something the size of a watermelon go through my reproductive organ, I imagine it would be akin to being akin to being kicked in the nuts but with Lorena Bobbit busy slicing of parts.
Lets see what else, okay don't want PMS, periodic emotional fluctuations, or men staring at my breasts, like having higher muscle mass, increased agression, and a proclivity to having your head bashed in.
There's so much if the option were open I'm surprised women just don't go male all of them, suppose there are some advantages to being female, and probably quite valid ones, but its far better to be male at least in my opinion.
I fairly certain I am not being chauvinistic, but simply stating a fact, oh well, we males also die younger, maybe not necessarily being due to sex linked traits but because of sex linked behavior patterns which are imposed upon us which tend to put increased stress on our hearts.
But the sex, well we might not have the orgasms as long as a female can, but well its a lot easier to get them, takes less work at least.
But on the whole its great being male, if the option presents try it.
