Anybody remember Star Control 2, one of the greatest and most amusing games of the last century? If so, check this out.

If you want to read about it, try here and here.

Then you may still enjoy Star Control 2. It's a really neat combination of strategy, RPG, and arcade action, with a heavy dose of humor. Sad to say, the guys who made it weren't engaged by Activision to make its successor, which was a bomb. One of those wonderful corporate decisions based on personality clashes that also gave us the likes of Return to Krondor and Might and Magic IX.

So Dynamix and 3DO killed the goose that laid the golden egg by hiring in new teams to develop the followups, and they failed.
That's exactly what happened with Star Control 3, too.

As for the Might and Magic games, they really took off with the third in the series, and continued pretty well through the seventh. The eighth started slipping--van Caneghem, the developer, later admitted they were pressured by the company he'd sold his assets too, 3DO, into throwing something on the market quickly.
Star Control 2 is the one to get, if you get any of that series. The first title was simply an arcade game, and the third is a bore, IMO.

Bah. Bunch of young'uns. They probably don't remember Zork either.
Yes, @fable, I do indeed remember Star Control. Granted, we are not of the same generation - I hail from modern Western culture, whilst you originated in ancient Mesopotamia - but I grew up with a computer in the home, beginning with the Commodore VIC 20. What a marvelous machine...20 K of memory.
Sheesh, I remember when 1 MB was a massive amount of memory.
Did you ever play Zork?
Ah, yes, the "Might and Magic" series. I played those on a Tandy 1000 ages ago. Not long after Microsoft came out with Windows 3.11, I delved into the original Civilization game. That was addictive.

I don't think its sucessors in the series came near to capturing the mood of the original, but Infocom did put out some damn fine games. Do you remember Leather Goddesses of Phobos, A Mind Forever Voyaging, and Nord and Bert Couldn't Make Head or Tail of It?

The only Might and Magic game I have is M&M6: 'The Mandate of Heaven'. I got it last summer alongside IWD2. The last I played it was early this year, when I got stuck.
I did ask you in your latest topic in the BG2 forum if it was okay to talk about it in SYM, so I was wondering if someone who knows of the game would care to exchange hints and such here in SYM.
Chanak: Ahhh yes, the ORIGINAL Civilization. My parents played the heck out of that, Colonization, Civilation II, Railroad Tycoon, and Master of Magic. God bless Sid Meyer.
Oh yeah, and speaking of him, apparently another Microprose classic, Pirates, is going to be re-released by Meyer's new game company, Firaxis. Did you hear about that?

@Galuf: I've played most of the Sid Meier games, including a number of MicroProse titles may years ago. I played the M1-A1 Abrams simulation game on an Amiga 500D in the early 90's (I wish I could remember the exact title). However, you'll note my age...for I am remembering a number of SSI games I played as well, and can't remember the titles for the life of me.
I remember SimCity when it was new...I haven't bought further releases of that game since, as I grew bored with it eventually. One my favorite SSI titles was Fantasy General...I wonder whatever became of that game.
I was also into all of the early space colonization games, including a little-known title called Ascendancy. This is why Master of Orion 3 has been pulling at me lately...I love space-based strategy games, and each time I pass that game by on the shelf, I come a little closer to buying it.
Overall, I've played countless games on the Atari 2500, Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Commodore computers (including the Amiga), IBM PC & clones...and now, lately, the Xbox. I had an Atari when they released Pong.
