Fable's thread about the Duct Tape Festival, made me realize that there are many little odd events that small towns hold during the year. I thought I would post a few of the ones in my area.

Woolly Worm Festival
Beattyville, KY (Lee County)
Don't miss this one of a kind festival where racing woolly worms is a highlight. A true predictor of the coming winter weather is the Official Lee County Woolly Worm Survey. Woolly Worms are racing on the hour every hour for this three day event with the Championship race Sunday at 4:00pm to close the festival. You will find great food, a parade, car show, live entertainment, a pet show, and lots of arts and craft vendors.

17th Annual Mountain Mushroom Festival 2007
Every year, on the last weekend in April, Estill County hosts the annual celebration of the morel mushroom with the Mountain Mushroom Festival in beautiful downtown Irvine, KY.
The Mountain Mushroom Festival features
the Mushroom Cook-Off, many local artisans, wood-crafts & craft-makers, local entertainers, 5K Fungus Marathon Race, Festival Food Court, Miss Mushroom Festival Pageant, Engine & Tractor Show and showcases the Grand Ole Parade.

Welcome to the 11th Annual Spoonbread Festival
Come and enjoy three days of family fun in Berea, the Folk Arts and Crafts Capital of Kentucky!
You will want to come early and stay late or possibly stay the entire weekend. Each day is filled with family fun, beginning Friday afternoon with a variety of exhibitors and culminating Friday night with free concerts in Memorial Park and the balloon glow. Saturday is an action packed day with more exhibits, Fun Park activities, 5K Run, tethered balloon rides, motorcycle show, dog show and free concerts in the park. Sunday features more exhibits, a car show and family fun in the Fun Park.

Well...
This isn't exactly local from my present perspective.. but a village very near to my SO's hometown hosts the Zurich Bean Festival.

Quote:
The Zurich Bean Festival is Huron County's biggest single-day event, drawing close to 25,000 visitors.

With Bean Festival just around the corner, a lot of work is being done in advanced preparation for a successful day.

With approximately 25,000 people visiting the small village of Zurich (population 900), a lot of work goes into preparing the meals for the Bean Festival. We turn 2500 pounds of raw white beans into our secret baked beans recipe. There are 180 loins to be cut, coleslaw dished out along with the applesauce. This is all done the week before.
Beans and cabbage....
