Hi all, I have turned into a pure lurker, but I hadn't disappeared, been reading the posts, etc, and obsessively playing BGII, although not so much anymore, just for fun, one hour a month, growing out of it, more interested in BGDA I and II, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and still can't get away from the latest dungeon crawler, all though it bothers me that the old Elf is now getting less evil.
But anyway I was playing the game, and looking at the specs of the various weapons, disruptor, blaster, hyperdrive, and then remembered all the details that went into the creation of Baldur's Gate and other games I played, and realized that a lot of real world stuff went into it, I mean you need really smart people to create this stuff, you need to understand literature, science, religion, basic social dynamics, etc., it isn't a field that dumb people can go into, or enjoy, it requires a hell of lot of creativity to create a whole world, even one based on scific or fantasy. So just realizing this made me feel less bad, I mean those who don't enjoy some form of fantasy are likely lacking in some form of creative faculty, so why feel bad about it, its actually good for you.
Tolkien himself put huge quantities of thought into creating his Lord of the Rings trilogy, so there to thinking in the real world, us fantasy people understand it better then those real people ever will, I mean how else would we even create a good fantasy?
I feel kind of proud to be part of such a select clientele of smart people.

Yeah... it is really cool to think that even this fantasy is based on a solid reality factor, and that our time is not completely wasted while playing games.
Games are a good thing to tune up our senses, and adding culture to them is just nice.
Have you ever played Rama? It is a completely strange experience, but some things discussed there - and in the books - help you understand the working of the universe and stuff.
Baldurs Gate is a very pretty story, with very good interpretation of AD&D rules. It could be more realistic in some aspects, but you can imagine how much research has been done to adapt that to a coherent reality.
I love gaming. Just love it.

Quote: | Yeah... it is really cool to think that even this fantasy is based on a solid reality factor | Well... parts of it. Of course there are always going to be some similarities with real life. However, it is an interesting topic, because I'm sure if you ask a lot of people why they like fantasy (and this poll has probably already been done here somewhere), a common answer is escapism, and distancing themselves from reality. So... should it be like real life? Doesn't that sort of defeat the point of fantasy?

| Dammit. I gotta find me a new, less constructive hobby.

It is an escape, but to similar patterns. You are always living on a world you know or understand on its basic levels. If a game gets too far away from these normal patterns either people will think theyr builder is a genious or a raving mad person.
BTW, what is the most strange fantasy game you've ever played? And which is the one you like best? Quote: |
