What do we do when we are not lurking/posting on SYM?
What are our passions in life?
What do we do for entertainment?
I am not thinking of work here (unless that IS your passion) but more the things that get us excited every day/week/month/year.
My passion is Hockey - the proper stuff on astro turf, not random violence on Ice (appologies to any Ice Hockey fans/players). I have been playing for more years than I care to count and have played to quite a high standard, though not to National 1st div (in UK) or 1A (in Aus). I am currently captain of a team in Glasgow. We have one game left for this season which we should win, and have the posibilty of winning the Scotish West District 2nd Division title. Regardless of that, we have already gained promotion to West District 1st Division for next season.
I am also coaching an u14 side for my club. They have a cup final to play this Sunday and if they win, they will be West District Champions. All of the District winners will go to a play off day to decide who will be Scottish Champions. Our u16 team is in the same position - Except that we have 3 u16 Scotland squad members in the team. This should be an interesting weekend.
If anyone is interested, I will post results next week.
I know that some SYMers have (or have had) interesting hobbies.
C.Elegans comes to mind - I think I remember her talking about mountains and things. I don't know about anyone else, but I would be interested to hear more about what SYMers do, and why they do it.

How bizarre, Jace, I was thinking of posting this very topic and was searching SYM to see if it had been done before (I'm sure a hobby thread exists). Oh well!
I play PC games ( ).
I collect (and watch) DVD's - I have almost 170 now.
I read History books ( ).
I paint - mostly Games Workshop stuff and other models. I did this as a kid but I have recently got back into it as I find it relaxes me.
I love to travel.
I am studying part time for an MSc, so this takes up a lot of my free time.

Passions. Music, movies and the odd stroll down the beach. Those quiet ones, away from those tourists. Gives me time to think.

Yes, yes. Good to see that people of discernment everywhere share the same tastes.

See, with me, *******[censored] is more of a way of life than just merely a hobby. I suppose you could say I was a connoisseur. | | |

Yeah, yeah, *******[censored] is something most of us who are over 16 will have in common. It is hardly original and does not tell us anything about you - unless you go into specifics (where you risk a). being ridiculed, b). banned and/or c). getting this thread closed.)
@Beldin - tell me about your house. Why are you building instead of buying? What is it made of? Where is it? How is the project going?
@Tam - What sort of music do you play? What do you draw? Do you plan to go anywhere with either of these or are they just something you do to relax?
@Grunty - Read history books hey. I would never have guessed. Where have you travelled to? What was the most interesting place? Are you studying something you have an interest in, or is it just something that will get you further in your carrier (or both)?
@No. 6 Dwarf (Sleepy, that's you) - Where do you go driving? What's the best hill walk you have done? Why did you give up Basketball?
Excuse the questions, but if these are your passions, tell a bit more about them.
Oh, in case anyone is interested, another one of my passions is Neolithic sites. I have not studied them, just visit all the ones I can.
So far the list includes - Tara, New Grange, various hill forts and a prehistoric bee hive(Erie). Maiden Castle, Stonehenge, Woodhenge, Flag Fen, Cern Abbis Giant, Uffington White Horse, Waylands Smithy, Castle Rig, various hill forts and one Broch (UK). I am going to the Orkney's later this year to see Skara Brey
and other things.

Excuse the questions, but if these are your passions, tell a bit more about them. | Driving, anywhere and everywhere at every opportunity I also find little patches of gravel to do handbrake turns and doughnuts on I also have an avid interest in in-car audio I currently have a fairly average sound system (CD-Changer with 50 and 25 watt speakers) but i am looking to upgrade.
Hill walk, defiantely on a really stormy day, walked to a trig point a few miles from my house and the wind was so strong one could lean against it and it kept one upright. That was the most fun, there have been others that were good, but that is without doubt the most profound
B'Ball, none of my current mates want to play and my ball is flat and my hoops backing rotted....that is the long and short of it

I despise people who continuelly use power cords. At the moment, I'm learning Eric Claptons Tears In Heaven.
As for drawing, I do it when I'm bored. ie during my studies etc. During my exams, I filled a few blank booklets full of drawings, much to the dismay of the examiners.

@Sleepy,
I am shocked. Here I was thinking you were a responsible mod type who drove a robin reliant and I find out that you do handbrakies on gravel roads. You should visit West Aus sometime. The gravel roads there are just awesome. I know what you mean re stormy days and walking. The one time I walked along Hadrians Wall, it was blowing a force 6 (or 8?) gale and raining. Wild experience. Good thing that the wind was at our backs or we would not have gotten anywhere.
@Tam,
Did you pass the Exam?

Well at home I have a variety of activities that keep me going.
1) Computer gaming. Unfortunately, I've started growing tired of BG2
BUT, I'm now into 'Fallout' and liking it. It's a bit too dark sometimes and I'm always reloading because cute little dogmeat gets killed, but there have been some fun moments. Ah, yes the memories. Being told by Tandy that we couldn't have a relationship because 'she likes guys'...Harry the Super Mutant's charm 'Hey there purdy lady'. Now if only I could take down the whole evil mutant operation without getting killed!!
2) Inviting friends over and drinking wine. This is one of my favorite activities, I usually do it once a week. It's amazing what women discuss when they're all relaxed. You learn about when they showered together and EXACTLY what they think of the men they're dating. But then these are my friends, so maybe I just pick them that way.
3) Playing with the bunny. He's taken to 'chinning' me which is basically putting his scent on me as a marker of ownership. He also chins his cage, the couch, and newspapers. This was fun as I was able to tell the SO that I belong to the bunny now, so hands off.
4) Walking and Running. I like this as it relaxes me and gives me time to sort through the confusion that is life.
5) Going out. This is low right now as I've cut my entertainment budget to pay for the wedding dress of my dreams. Only 7 more months of scrimping until I can buy it Unfortunately I only started saving four days ago and I'm going through withdrawl as my entertainment budget includes my wine with friends budget. *looks pitiful*

@Vivien: I've grown unfortunately tired of BG also. Fallout is a lot of fun--I've played through it a couple of times. One of my greatest hopes is that they will come out with Fallout 3.
My hobbies:
Playing piano (mostly Bach fugues--partly because I love Bach more than any composer now, but also because the sustain pedal does not work on my Kawai hybrid piano--I hate it and long for the day I have a real piano, but I would need a bigger place)
Writing fiction. Currently two-thirds of the way through a novel. I'd put it away for a while, but started working on finishing it recently, esp. since some artist friends who'd read portions of it are encouraging me.
Reading of course. About to order a book a few people have told me is good: Perdido Street Station by China Mieville
Gardening (I'm new to this, trying not to get all my plants killed this year)
Hanging out in Old Men's Bars or looking for more Old Men's Bars
PC games (duh)
Travelling--have been all over the US, Central America, Spain, Morocco, etc. Hoping to go to Brazil soon.
