| | | Do you do sushi, like I don't? (spam on subject only!) It's colorful. It's varied. It's highly nutritious. We've been trying it repeatedly lately, and despite my best efforts, sushi still tastes as appetizing as Bush administration speeches. Yes, I've gone for the bland, the spicy, the ones wrapped in seaweed and the ones that just lie in a bright slab on your plate and coax your admiration. But despite the fact that I dearly love seafood cooked in a number of ways, I can't find it in myself to enjoy the things.
Do you feel the same way? Do you dote on sushi? What are your strategies for overcoming anti-sushi propoganda and taste buds? This is your forum! Let's hear from you on one of the most important and central issues of the day!

| | | I do not like fish or even seafood in genereal (no, not even mussles... I know that's almost high treason being a Belgian) and while I have no problem with smoked fish and less of a problem with certain types of fish (tuna, grilled sole,...), the idea of eating fish raw triggers my gag reflex...
So no help for Sushi from me. |

| | The secret is in the sauce. Maybe you should try eating sushi with a spoon and fork.
But I guess, the secret is in the sauce. Try dipping those mouth-watering wonders in soy sauce with a good amount of lemon and wasabi. Squeeze the lemon into the wasabi. Stir till pasty then add the soy sauce.
Enjoy. |

| | I love sushi....
With the soy sauce dip, without... with wasabi and without.
I like the rolls, the individual pieces, rice on the outside...rice on the inside....
Um.. well you get the picture

| | I love sushi and usually treat myself every Friday to some for lunch.
The sauce can definitely change things around regarding the overall taste but take it easy on the wasabi if you are not used to it.
In your search for sushi that you can enjoy, see if you can find what is known here in the states as "California-style" sushi. This is sushi with the meat cooked. I know this is technically no longer sushi but the taste and texture is very different from regular sushi and you may be able to enjoy it.

| | | The only sushi I've tested was cooked shrimp rolls (shrimp in the middle, rice around it, then seaweed or whatever that black paper stuff is, I used to know the name), and it was sold at my school cafeteria. Pretty good, though, and once I have money with which to buy food, I plan on trying legitimate sushi.
On a somewhat similar topic, raw oysters disgust me. If I want something like that in my mouth, I'll go to the meat-packing district.

| | | I love them. Soy sauce doesn't matter; I can live with them, and can do without them, but I refuse to touch even the tiniest wasabi particle. |

| | I've been around people when they eat sushi, and all I ever tried was the wasabi. I tried my first bit of sushi last week; I liked it. Some chicken teryaki thing. I'm almost afraid to try others and be disappointed, now.

Umm... that's not sushi.. Though there is something called "Temaki," which is grilled eel in Teriyaki sauce as a type of sushi.
@Fable, in addition to 'California Rolls' you may also like Dynamite Crab Rolls and Soft Shell Crab Rolls or Spider Rolls.. all of which involve cooked seafood
For that matter, you might like Temaki as well. My advice..start with the cooked varieties and work your way up to those that use raw fish.

| | Sushi has been the most popular fast-food in the main cities of Sweden for the last 10 years or more. Where I live, there are more sushi bars than pizza restaurants and kebab places. I believe the reasons why sushi quickly became part of the Swedish cuisine back in the early 1990's, is because Swedes generally fairly health conscious and all Swedes are used to eating raw fish. The big advantage of sushi compared to the traditional Swedish dishes with raw fish, it that the fish sushi is not rotten or fermented
My personal favorite is sashimi, open sushi, preferrably with Japanse soy and plenty of wasabi. Luckily, some blocks from where I live, there is a sushi bar which even the Japanese at my lab think is good!

DW, I have tried these, and like them. There's a small chain that started recently on the upper east coast that offers a buffet of perhaps 30-40 sushi varieties, and another 15 cooked Japanese food dishes (including those you mention). They even have chicken teriyaki. The only problem is, they violate the main canons of sushi, that it must be raw, and associated with the ocean.
Clearly, I'm in the minority, here. So what do you likie about sushi? Were you all exposed to it (as a food, not a substance to throw at enemies) at an early age? Or did you discover it as an adult, and fall in love with the flavors? Or is it the colors? The neatness? The fact that you can arrange the seedweed to look like hair on a plate, and make a variety of faces?

The taste..the texture...the appearance. It was just one of those things that instantly appealed. I like all sushi except Tamago (basically, a chunk of sweetened omelet *shudder*), but my absolute favourite is Maguro (red tuna). *blissful sigh*
In addition to the nutritious aspects I also like the fact that it fills you without making you feel bloated.
I suspect part of it might be related to the fact that I grew up eating raw, pickled herring (which I still have a serious weakness for).

And I like anything that I think tastes good. I was undeterred when it was revealed to me what was put in lunch meats and hot dogs, sometimes what might even be unintentionally put in them. I could eat a cockroach in chocolate and think it's delicious, and if I'm told what it is, I may say, "Ew, that's sick!" but then I might ask for another. And in some places, an insect is a delicacy.
